Tune in and experience select hand-picked improvised “Flips,” culled from our 2016 journeys from Episodic Festival stops, and shows from our West and California runs.

Derek on “Flips”…

“We ended up devising something we call ‘flips.” We’ll start with a produced song, and everyone has a philosophy for playing on top of the produced songs. Alvin has acoustic drums that he’ll play on top of it, and we also have drum triggers for electronic drum sounds so we can get a produced sound from the live kit. When I call a ‘flip’ everyone knows that I’m about to filter out the produced track. When the produced music disappears, the live musicians completely switch their sound to something that’s more electronic. Borahm will drop into a synth bass, Alvin will switch to an electronic kick and an electronic snare. It’s like a quick crossfade. It allows us to go from the produced track, with the band accentuating it, to a fully live band without losing something…It’s completely improvised but we’ve put a lot of time into making sure they know, stylistically, where the bounds are.”

A path can be interpreted as a road, sidewalk, any physical thing that carries us in our direction. Or it can be something internal, like the electrical pathways in our mind that form thought, emotion, and embody the inner workings of human sense and experience. motifv is a young artist from Colorado driven by an inner call to sonically express and share his path to the world.

Known to friends and family as Joseph Kechter, motifv creates beautifully blunted beats that meander between futuristic synthesis and collages of gospel soul. He chases light anywhere that it may lead and leaves refreshing vibrations in his wake. In an effort to ask questions that inspire and have answers that resonate in resolve, motifv looks to the sun moon and stars for guidance.

This track contains samples from Finally Moving, Make You Feel, and We Must Go On, as well as a couple of my own samples and synthesis worked in for that TheBusiness. sound. Finally We Must Feel. - TheBusiness. (PL Mashup/Remix)

What happens when you combine groovy New York funk with deep southern Georgia soul? The Lipphead Remixed EP aims to find out. 

Releasing on both Young Heavy Souls and Philos Records, digitally and on 7” vinyl, the offering is a one of a kind amalgamation of tastemakers producing a unique electro-sonic sound. 

Lipphead is the 2019 collaborative project from New York producers @blockheadnyc and @eliotlipp. The self-titled EP release on Young Heavy Souls includes two tracks, “Slippery Fingers” and “Just To Prove.” 

When Philos Records label mates @daily-bread and @derleemusic heard the two track work from their peers, they were inspired to put their individual spin on the sounds. This duo’s debut collaborative recording occurred back in 2016, with their 9-track Divided Souls LP release. Combining vision and style again, the Lipphead Remixed EP sees the pair each handling one rack and flavoring them with southern grit and soulful samples.

Anchor Bay, California based electronic music artist and producer Michal Menert draws breath from the world that surrounds him, transmuting daily inspiration into music that is singularly his own.

A youth steeped in a broad swath of both Eastern and Western musical traditions gives Menert a deep palate from which to draw; his passion for original analog sounds coupled with a vast knowledge of music history has given him a unique ability to pull from the global creative canon with ease. A multi-instrumentalist, he incorporates live guitar and keys into his final production for a full sound and rich feel. 

As Menert co-produced the chart topping Pretty Lights album Taking Up Your Precious Time it was natural that he was the first artist to join Pretty Lights Music. His debut solo album Dreaming of a Bigger Life was released in 2010, followed by 2012’s mega-LP Even If It Isn’t Right. In winter of 2015 Menert released the highly anticipated Space Jazz, followed by fall 2015’s debut release by his band Michal Menert & the Pretty Fantastics, 1. His next release is expected in winter 2018.

In the live realm, Menert supplied sound design for Dead & Co tours in 2016 and 2017. Additionally, he supplied sound design on Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum rerelease in Fall 2016. Building on that relationship, Menert in both a featured performer and co-producer on Hart’s next studio record, slated for release in the fall of 2017.

Menert’s reputation as a live performer continues to grow, as he brings his music to fans nationwide via both his septet, Michal Menert & The Pretty Fantastics, and his 22-piece all-star ensemble the Michal Menert Big Band. His collaborations have led to the formation of myriad ongoing side projects including Manic Menert (with Manic Focus), Half Color (with Paul Basic) & Club Scouts (with Mux Mool). Over the years Menert has shared the stage with a number of musical luminaries including STS9, Bassnectar, Umphrey’s McGee, and more, and played legendary venues including the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, The Gorge in Washington and the Red Rocks Amphitheatre (twice in 2016 alone.)

Committed to a community driven approach to collaborative creativity, Menert works hand in hand with producers he chooses for his own record label, Super Best Records. A dynamic and ideological producer, collaborating and working closely with a new generation of hip-hop & EDM producers, Menert is dedicated to bringing a new musical vision to life free from limitation.
