Sinfonia in Memoriam is an expression of emotion and literal pain of soldiers and their friends/families in WW1. It describes the whole span of the war from the trigger to the conclusion. The idea first came to me when reading some programme notes about Robert Simpson’s Symphony No. 1 where I discovered that it revolved around 2 key centres a tritone apart. The powerful dissonance and conflict between the 2 keys was the main stimulus for Sinfonia in Memoriam. I took each of the keys, C and F#, as a different side in a war and throughout we hear them fighting for dominance.
