Pierre Bastien and Michel Banabila return with Nuits Sans Nuit, their second collaboration following their Baba Soirée debut from 2023. Recorded as an intuitive exchange between Rotterdam and Valencia, the album emerged from a simple ping-pong process: Banabila sculpted sounds and atmospheres, to which Bastien responded with his distinctive instrumental palette: flute-augmented cornet, mechanised log drum, and more. Mixed by Banabila, the result is a raw yet immersive work that resonates with a somnambulant, wide-awake presence.

Pierre Bastien: "When Michel had finished mixing and editing, I listened to the whole record and sensed a dreamlike quality in it. It reminded me of a book I read years ago: ‘Nuits Sans Nuit Et Quelques Jours Sans Jour’ by Michel Leiris.  Around that same time, some fifty years ago, I was playing in Nu Creative Methods with Bernard Pruvost, a duo that appears on the Nurse With Wound list. Since then, Pruvost has turned to painting, and his work is as dreamlike as our music. We asked him to contribute one of his paintings for the album cover."

Nuits Sans Nuit unfolds through shifting shades of melancholy. "I don't know how to describe the feeling of these crazy times we live in," says Banabila. "Les plus désespérés sont les chants les plus beaux,”  Bastien quotes De Musset. Wordless yet deeply expressive, the album invites listeners into a space of contemplation, where meaning emerges through immersion — like ritual music carrying an unspoken message. Echoes of saudade, blues, fado, and soleá surface in the duo’s playful noise, reimagined through their singular vocabulary.

Private Sphere

Pingipung proudly introduces Iko Chérie, the experimental pop project of French multiinstrumentalist Marie Merlet. The 7'' single "Ghosted Ghosters of the Holy G" offers a first glimpse into her forthcoming LP, Soft Centre (Pingipung 093, 7th Nov 2025) — a hypnotic blend of dub-infused songwriting and blissful noise.On the flipside, French electro-dub visionaries Froid Dub unravel the track into a shadowy, slowmotion version, with a solid sub-bass, flickering delays and half-heard whispers.

Iko Chérie says about the single: “The melody and structure came to me in one go – I recorded a
draft on my phone at a party. It’s a playful take on ghosting karma, with ooh-oohs and a vocal line
inspired by the vibes of Lovers Rock.”

Trained in classical piano as a child, Marie Merlet shifted to teaching herself the guitar when she
discovered the DIY indie punk scene, she then studied jazz singing and electro acoustic
composition in Bordeaux before moving to London to play bass in Monade alongside Laetitia
Sadier (Stereolab).

With her solo project Iko Chérie, she crafts a surreal sound world of woozy incantations, Casio
drones, and reverb-drenched guitars, woven with processed spoken-word samples.
Beyond Iko Chérie, Marie Merlet tours globally with Gina Birch (The Raincoats) and is the
guitarist in psychedelic cumbia outfit Malphino. She also hosts a monthly Soho Radio show
championing women in music and curates a film & performance series at London’s Cinema
Museum.

Michel Banabila, born 1961, is a sound artist, composer, and producer. Banabila has released music since 1983 and has produced musical scores for numerous films, documentaries, theater plays and choreography. His music varies from minimal loop-based electronica, fourth world, and neoclassical pieces, to drones,  experimental ambient,  and punk-as-fuck tape music. His work has been published by labels like Bureau B (DE), Eilean Rec (FR), Knekelhuis (NL), Pingipung (DE) and Séance Centre (CA)
