It's the summer of 1939. With the inevitability of war with Germany looming, the British government devise a plan to evacuate all children and vulnerable people, moving them to safe areas away from the cities.

The scheme was voluntary but the parents would not know when or where the children would be taken. For those parents, mine included, this posed the problem, how can we "Do The Right Thing"

After the children are gone, my mother, brother George (who was just a toddler), and new born baby brother, John are also evacuated.

My father, left alone in London and serving in the ARP feels the anguish of the terrible scenes surrounding him.

Running Out Of Life

At this point in the "Evacuees" story, the children have been "billeted" in a small village. I would be quick to point out that the vast majority of people who took in evacuee children were kind, loving people. There were a few though who were not.
My sisters were billeted with one such person, and the eldest managed to get a message to my mother, who came to collect them. The woman told my mother she couldn't have them (as they were paid a small allowance for doing so). My mother's response, as you can well imagine, is portrayed in this song, "How Dare You".

How Dare You

So the kids have left London, and "Frank" the local policeman sings of the plight of the children "heading off to who knows where" in this song, "No Time To Wave Goodbye".
I "borrowed" the title from a great novel by Ben WIcks, himself an evacuee.

This song from "Evacuees" tells of when my sisters had arrived at Bletchingdon, in Oxfordshire. The younger ones were very nervous and apprehensive on their first night away from home, so the eldest, Vi, suggested they play a game.

At this point in the story, the children, having been evacuated to Oxfordshire, get a surprise visit from their mother who shows them their new baby brother. The eldest, Vi, is so excited, she picks him up and runs off across the lawn with him, settling him down on the grass. She sings him this song.

So for this song, we skip to the end of the story. It's 1945 and the war is ending. Vi meets Bill, who is working for her dad at the bakery. They're little more than kids themselves, but they realise something special is happening. They eventually marry when Vi is 18 and Bill is 20. The true story is that my sister Vi and her husband Bill were married for 67 years until we sadly lost Bill three years ago.

So a year has gone by since the children were evacuated, and they have to leave Bletchingdon Park after the death of Sir Abe Bailey.
They're billeted with Mrs Timothy (name changed) who is not nice to them at all. Vi decides to try to get a letter to their mum.

Michel Griffin bought his first guitar at 14 because he noticed girls liked guitar players. He never took a guitar lesson but, under the influence of songwriters like Dylan, Cohen, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell, he began to write songs that told stories ...

He’s been writing songs ever since. He has performed regularly on BBC radio (where one of his songs was a Pick of the Week) and his career has taken him all over the world, with spells living in Paris, New York and Switzerland.

He finally settled in the Lot valley in SW France, where he runs the critically acclaimed Cahors Folk Club. He performs at venues all over the area, a tune of his was featured in the American film Married Men, and he has recorded 5 CDs.

In concert, Griffin charms his audiences with self-deprecating wit and, like most clowns, he’s alive to pathos. His lyrics share stories and insights, and his accomplished finger-picking is a perfect foil for his smoky, evocative voice.

Griffin's music blends folk and blues with humour and passion--to produce songs that will echo in your heart.
