To celebrate this new accolade we asked Mr Kirkwood to record something different for our mixtape series...

"i've spent most of my time on my own during Lockdown.
This has pushed me into some deep contemplation at times, and that contemplation has most frequently been about my relationship with music.

If you consider that music is both the way i make my living and also the main way that I project myself to the world, then you'll probably agree it's a pretty natural thing for me to think about.

What I discovered was that I'd become unhappy with a lot of the things I was choosing to do

This revelation made me decide to reapproach what I do with my time, what I give value to, and what I choose to tell people is significant.

The most immediate change is that I now find myself working as an artist in Residence for Sage Gateshead, which is one of the most important Concert Venues in the UK.

Over the next 10 months the Sage is supporting me in making a performance piece which will push me as a music maker and conceptual artist, and which will allow me to explore another thing that I find very important, that is to say the notion of my regional identity and the things that I can do that use my skills and experience to make the region a better place to live.

Further to that I've found the time to work on other less immediately obvious projects which resonate more deeply with me.

I've finished an album with the Vocalist and songwriter "Marske" which will be out before the end of the year, and (despite some crazy curveballs) I'm making headway on my multi-vocalist album project as "Antisocial Alliance".

I'm also committed to launching a not-for-profit organisation very soon which will use the music I've dedicated my life to in a way that helps underprivileged or marginalised people in the North East of England.
The nicest thing I've found about all of this is that it's got me back to simply engaging with music because it pleases me, not because I need to pay the bills or because I feel like I need to use it to climb up some kind of imaginary pecking order.

All of these changes have meant that I get to record mixes like this one. 
Free from anyone else's opinion and for no other reason the fact that I wanted to record it.

I'm not saying it's the end for me as a DJ or House Music producer, as that's something I think is in my bones.
I think I am saying that I'll be doing it a lot more selectively now and that if you ever catch me doing either in future then you can be sure that the only reason I'm doing it is because I completely believe in what it is I'm doing at the time.

It was a great job, but I really needed to go back to doing it for the love instead"
