These 3D recordings, even though they were made with sophisticated equipment, do not provide justice to the haunting sounds emitted from the hive transmitted through the headphones I hear while recording them. The first time I reluctantly and slowly lowered my hand holding the microphone into the hive, my heart nearly stopped. I felt like a portal to a dark underworld had been opened, like what I recall people saying they feel when they look into the lava of a volcano. Like lava, which comes from the very center of the earth, which eventually become crystals, being close to these deepest elements, which innately labor so intensely to produce the materials that protect their families to the death, that can make such sounds to which I could have such a visceral reaction.
