February is Black History Month, when the achievements of African Americans in the United States and the world are celebrated. Social historian Earl Lewis, who directs the University of Michigan Center for Social Solutions, says the month is still important and relevant today. As the Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of History, Afroamerican and African Studies, and public policy, Lewis said now -- as the country seeks to heal racial tensions -- is the opportunity for all to read, listen and learn about African American culture and history beyond Frederick Douglass, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, or President Barack Obama.
