In 2018 Alan Titchmarsh and the Love Your Garden crew came to our building site of a back garden in Preston and transformed it into a suburban paradise. 

We couldn't say thank you enough for how wonderful it was and how life-changing it was for us to have such a beautiful escape at that point in our lives. We had run out of money after moving into our dream home and renovating the entire house... Roisin had just started chemo for a second time... Ivy was about to turn 4. It was absolutely perfect. 

So we decided to record a song (one of our all time favourites), mix up the lyrics and send it to all the staff that worked tirelessly to create our beautiful garden.

I just found this track on a CD hidden in a box. I haven't listened to it again since we recorded it on Garage Band at Roisin's Aunty Sharon's caravan in Silverdale. it sounds much better than I imagined. The bird noise you can hear throughout is the birds in the trees at the back of the garden. Have a listen!...

In high school we made a band called Equator. We did gigs for the whole school at dinner time and sometimes we would blast a tune out in morning assembly. Elephantstone and Waterfall by The Stone Roses... Alive, Slide Away, Supersonic and Live Forever by Oasis. We even did When I Come Around by Greenday. We also wrote a few of our own tunes. Lloyd was a great singer and definitely had a gift for songwriting. Eventually me and Mul broke off and made our own band at college, recruited Ric on bass and made The KBC. Ric was in another band at high school called Alcoholic Youth (class band name!) and he played guitar. Ric was, and has always been, the rhythm guitar master. I remember his red Squier Strat. When I was at college he would come round to mine at the weekend and we would record instrumentals on my cassette 4 track. 

I feel like our year in school had loads of us who were well into guitar and learning how to play. Even lads who were sort of the sporty type who you would never imagine would be into guitars were at it. 

Mul used to have lessons and his teacher was class. He would go to his teacher with a tune he wanted to learn and come back a week later to tell us all how to play it. I remember him showing us Waterfall in the music corridor, we were all stood there listening in amazement. And his dad had a photocopier at his house for some reason. Mul photocopied the whole tab book for Second Coming and Tellin Stories for me. We must've spent months and months learning the intricacies of the Tears solo, or the outro for I Am The Res. 

Lloyd could play drums, and guitar, AND sing. He showed me how to play the Supersonic drum beat on his thighs in the PE changing rooms. We would get to school early and climb in through the music room window to have a 5 minute blast on the shite drum kit they had before the teachers heard us and kicked us out. Great times. 

Our music teacher at Our Lady's was well into it - Mrs Parkhouse. Legend. She set us up with a gig at a primary school in Preston, and got her son in to record a track of ours on his multitrack recorder, which we thought was absolutely the best thing in the world at the time. This is the song, 'Broken'. 

Lloyd wrote the song and played bass, Cronin on drums and me and Mul on guitars. I think this was recorded in 1999 or 2000. We would've all been 14 or 15.

In the early-mid 00's me, Mul and Ric made a band... The KBC. Over the next 10 years or so we played all over the UK, Europe and Japan. Never quite cracked it but had a fucking great time trying. Signed to an independent label High Voltage in the UK founded by the legendary Richard Cheetham, and Fabtone Records in Japan - big up G-San. Released a couple of albums and EP's and several singles in the process. Everything is on Spotify/Apple Music etc... but a handful of my favourite demos that never made the cut can be found here.
