The piece deals with human sounds, spoken language and its emotional charge, and with a subjective sound environment, in a way of internal sound ecology. Conceptual Act Theory suggests that language plays a role in emotion because language supports the conceptual knowledge used to make meaning of sensations from the body and the world in a given context. The viewpoints I built on consider the language a basis for music and the music as the language of emotions. Human musical ability is proposed to play a key phylogenetic role in the evolution of language, and the similarity of hierarchical structure in music and language has led to considerable speculation about their shared mechanisms. In order to understand our own emotions hidden in our speech, I consider animals sounds as inspirational source in a search for the essence of human sound.

I interviewed people about the issues connected to the topic of reproduction. Recordings of our talks were meditating over topics such as choice of giving birth, parenthood, family trauma, abortion, or transhumanism, and served as the source material for manipulating the speech into abstract sonic grains, by distillation of its emotional essence in the process called sound granulation. The long interviews on the emotionally loaded topics revealed personal opinions and relations to the issues. In series of improvisations I was granulating the parts of the speech, searching within grains for hidden meanings, as they were coming forward. This process created samples, later used in the final composition as vocals. The instrumental part is composed in a similar way, documenting the urge to create music as the soundtrack of the psychical state. Recorded improvisations on hardware synthesizers are the source material to form the timeline of the composition. I approach sound as therapeutical personal tool, which allows me to translate internal feelings into the abstract message, open to audience interpretation. I have few intentions within the structure of the composition, for example using low frequencies of the percussions in 4 channel set up to "lock" the body into the trance by repetitive and ritualistic drumming. Sounds in mids keep the narratives, highs will set the mind free to float over the transposed feelings. This take on dispersing inner stress and excessive emotions comes from personal experience as a dancer and also from the practice of various forms of exercises, such as taichi or tensegrity. It is known that dance and singing releases hormones which makes us feel good, and I also believe that evoking the traumatic experiences, by bringing them vividly into the center of our attention, while physically working on "vibrating" this energy into embodied harmonized state of being, actually dissolves old traumas. Inspired by the effects proven in buddhistic chanting, I named this creations "vibrational mantras".

On a recent walk around my local park and across its rather impressive yet brutal looking suspension footbridge which spans across the river below I noticed the growth of lichen on its fabricated structure, the bridge is only a few years old and I was taken by the bright yellow fungi contrasting against the wine coloured painted metal supports and the black slip resistant walk way, I felt this would make a nice photograph so I took a picture with my phone. 

The image kinda lingered in my brain longer than I expected and I was fascinated how the lichen was taking over the bridge, almost as if it was trying to blend in the alien structure to its natural surroundings.

I began to see a connection between nature's ability to grow in the most unexpected environments and how growth can happen to us in the unexpected situations, particularly poignant in the current pandemic we all find ourselves in, for many this has been a challenging time for sure but also its been a time of growth as we find new ways to cope and perhaps discover that maybe we should be doing things different in our lives. 

The track itself, came about purely through experimenting with the Moog Grandmother initially, a random generative patch I created was the catalyst, by dialling various control knobs it created very varied and unexpected results, I also captured some drones that evolved from this patch and then built more synth parts from the Prophet Rev2, & the Supernova II, eventually the Moog elements became more like background effects and as the track comes to its final quarter I played some improvised keys using the Native Instruments Maverick Piano which I felt complimented some of haunting synth sounds.

The title "Growth" seemed to fit as the track grew from an unusual sonic foundation just like the lichen had grown on the metal of the very industrial and brutal looking footbridge at my park.

Dublin based Mick Chillage has been producing various strains of electronic music since 1996. 
Was one half of Djing duo "The Chillage Idiots" that played a diverse range of music over the Dublin airwaves in the late 90's & into the 00's. 

Mick has released on Pete Namlook's Fax label as a solo artist and in collaborative mode with Lee Norris as Autumn Of Communion. 
Over the years he has built up a prolific collection of releases through solo and collaborations. Most are within the Ambient spectrum on various labels like, 
Txt, Carpe Sonum, Databloem, A Strangely Isolated place, Touched, Fantasy Enhancing & more.. 

In 2020 Mick created his own label Before & After Silence Recordings to handle his steady output, focusing on CD releases.
