Ron Boots is among the most engaging Electronic Musicians ever exporting music from The Netherlands. Since the late 1980s, his work has been rooted in the Berlin School yet reaches far beyond the basic fundamentals of the genre. Combining elements of Contemporary Instrumental, Film Soundtracks and Spacemusic, Boots' music moves easily between the mainstream and the cosmic. 

In 1995, together with Kees Aerts, Ron founded the well-respected Groove Unlimited label. This was initially a vehicle for Ron and Kees to release their own solo albums and collaborations, such as BAH. The label has continued to this day, with an ever-growing worldwide roster of Electronic artists. Kees left Groove in 2011, leaving Ron to continue alone, but they parted as friends.

Back to our usual edition for this month with a look at the latest releases. From Lisa Bella Donna’s crystalline images on the modular synthesizer systems to Harald Nies classic electronic music with space-rock elements. Erik Wollo’s single, an EP of remixes, is an exquisite collection of moods and emotions, ranging from vigorous and earthy to mesmerizing evocative. A heady mixture of an epic tour de force of electronics from Surface 10 is almost beyond categorisation, and Bart Hawkins further establishes himself as a master of atmospheres extruded from the complex palette of the modular synthesizer, just some of the 22 artists appearing in this edition.

As our support for the unjustified war in Ukraine started over a year ago, we decided to feature a few musicians from that country in this latest edition. Zavoloka's experimental work began with that inspiration from British ‘90s electronic music, which is still a key influence for her, but she’s expanded into the world of field recordings with strong driving rhythms. You won’t necessarily be able to pick out the piano submerged in Endless Melancholy music, but it’s there, providing a steady drone, which has a very mellow type ambience. Duo Gamardah Fungus’ music and field recording work invokes the sparse open landscapes of Ukraine’s rural areas, and they try to reach the enigmatic, viscous and calm atmosphere of the very cosmos.
Also in our lineup are some of our favourite names spanning many decades with new releases, including Erik Wollo, Steve Roach, Robert Scott Thompson & Craig Padilla.

Vintage music comes from Rolf Trostel’s last album ‘Narrow Gate of Life’, recorded in 1983 at a live concert in the imposing Romanesque church of St. Pere de Galligants in Girona.
Rolf worked with the Hamburg musician inventor and sound tinkerer Wolfgang Palm on the PPG and tested the then-new digital wave computer 360, releasing only four albums and leaving the scene for “private life”.

As we said in the past, our podcasts are not like DJ mixes. We are here to promote electronic music showcasing so many different genres in that field, which is sometimes challenging and thought-provoking, featuring mostly up-to-date new releases. 
Our analogue/modular section includes the musician Hélène Vogelsinger, with her second part in the Metaphysical Alteration series of four sessions, taking place in the same huge abandoned place, Suki Sou from the peak district in the UK using Buchla, Moog modular systems and rare analogue synths  - Michael Rother (NEU!/Harmonia) said "I am impressed by the conceptual clarity of Suki Sou's album ‘Notes’ on listening. I can hear common roots to Harmonia's music, and I'm sure many of our fans will enjoy Suki's tracks,”  and with the legendary “lost” Node album “Singularity”, presented here for the first time, is mastered to modern standards but otherwise untouched and in its original form and recorded to two-track with no overdubs.

As always, we are governed by the releases that come in every month; we’ve certainly had our fair share this time of ambient, symphonic, neo-classical & experimental stuff for this podcast. 
In addition to what would have been Vangelis’s 80th birthday, there are tributes from Michael Neil on his album ‘Into Infinity’, & Aural Films, with thirty-seven artists from around the world who have contributed their own reflections on his vast career, four & half hours of music, we’ve selected four tracks from this special collection titled ‘Tears In The Rain’. Someone you may not have heard of, Philip Jeck, who died last year, worked with old records and record players salvaged from junk shops. He really did play them as musical instruments, genuinely creating moving and transfixing music where we hear the art, not the gimmick. On the album ‘Stardust’ he collaborated with Faith Coloocia.

SEQUENCES PODCAST  No 230

With a third of the year already gone by, the so-called pandemic has quietly dropped out from the main media news, but more worrying is the war continuing in Ukraine with no end in sight.
As you know, we’ve supported Ukraine & Russian musicians with no malice to the latter, any music from them kept out of the politics of this war.
The lineup for this edition is mostly names that have appeared before on Sequences, except for Alpha Romeo’s sublime mixes of retro synth urban vibes with quality production.  Beatless mixtures of treated guitar and electronics inspired by nature and effects treatments by Trem 77.  On Tone Science no 7 are modular synthesists Andrew Ostler, three aspects of drones sequences & audio processing, with Dark Sparkler creating a stormy shipwreck of a patch with siren calls & turbulent water., finally Shajan on the relaxing subtle and multi-faceted music from another excellent compilation from BSC Music.
The vintage track comes from the prolific German experimental musician Conrad Schnitzler associated with West Germany's Kraut rock movement, who joined Tangerine Dream for their debut album Electronic Meditation in 1970 and the founder of the band Kluster. Conrad passed away in 2011.

Only one edition this month due to moving my daughter & son-in-law out of my place into their newly renovated home. 

Meanwhile, I present our first Sequences audio tape from 1992 remastered was born from the demise of the UK Electronic music audio magazine, Inkeys and the short-lived Syntrax.  Our debut edition, released in 1992, was the only one mastered on audio cassette, which, unfortunately, is now unplayable. This is a remastered version without the banter between tracks (we couldn’t extract) using the original CDs & cassettes (which, luckily, were okay). There were no downloads in those days. All promos came by post & visiting various festivals; the tracks on the original tape were cut short, but now they are complete except for those that needed an edit due to their length.

I was a complete novice starting this project with no experience. I have to blame my good friend for many years Clive Littlewood (Electronical Dreams), for starting this audio magazine.  Armed with only a cassette recorder, no software, and no mixer, adding banter between tracks was a very tedious stop-start affair. Looking back now, it was very primitive, and I’m somewhat embarrassed listening to the original tape now. I purchased a DAT recorder & a simple mixer for later editions onwards, which made it easier to compile the tapes.     Mick (theEd)

Sequences Audio tape No 1

We welcome eight new acts to Sequences, including Christine Ott’s two bands, The Cry, an improvising trio with multiple textures & the duo Snowdrops, a unique combination of contemporary classical, jazz, electronic music and film score. With her distinctive voice Amaya (Maud Of Moth), a Madrid born residing in Edinburgh, dances all over her deftly woven compositions. Not using a name but numbers 58918012 score a pretty dark/melancholic/sad /cinematic and even a bit depressive sound—another stark & desolate release, ‘Hinterland’ from Electronic Death Black Dogs. Norwegian cinematic ambient electronic project LIGHTS A.M has everything from uplifting energy, playful sequences and experimental sound design to fearful moods and melancholic melodies. The collaborative project, From Overseas & City Of Dawn, brought together by a love of melodic guitar-based ambient music and tape loops, wrapping up with Slow Beethoven performed in the empty seven-storey steel water tank’s sonic environment, an extremely resonant space, which this quartet slows the movement drastically, usually seven minutes long to become a unique 44-minute work with Tank’s swirling reverb sustains sounds for up to 40 seconds, “This collaboration has created something that is still Beethoven, yet otherworldly”.

With many recent releases, this edition gives us more ambient electro-acoustic & downtempo music, including two pioneering musicians from the 80s to the present day.  Steve Roach with the 20th anniversary of ‘Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces, where the label Projekt collects all four parts into a single release — close to five hours of electronic ambient music, which allows the listener blissful hours on the high frontier between deep listening music and the spirituality of pure sound. The musical alchemist Robert Scott Thompson combines his mastery of the electroacoustic, acousmatic, contemporary instrumental and avant-garde genres on Placid.  
Our modular track comes from the album Myuthafoo, based on creative sequencing processes that playfully unravel Caterina Barbieri's deep-rooted interest in time, space, memory and emotion.
Following lengthy negotiations upon the release of her 2022 debut, Nova Cat (yes, a cat), reluctantly agreed to Projekt Sam Rosenthal’s addition of ambient music to two tracks on her sophomore effort, Stellar purr.

It’s great to see the feedback from some of you who enjoyed the Modular/vintage edition. Now, back to our usual look at recent new releases, with another round of superlative sounds from musicians based around the globe. Seven new names added to the list include, Under Water Sleep Orchestra, a nightmarish trip within blurry worlds and a nostalgic journey of dark ambient with a cinematic edge. The duo A Winged Victory Of A Dividing Pair music built on their foundations in ambient and neoclassical. Dramón brings experimental climatic and noisy music inspired by ambient and electronics as the basis of his creation. Incorporating gentle guitar synth flute and percussion, dappled with nature sounds, comes from Carlos Denger.
Known for his performances using lap steel, guitarist Frank Schultz takes a drifting journey into a cavernous and droning ambience. The unusual setup by Edouard Ferlet of two pianos, one of which is mechanical, echoes the work of Philip Glass or Nils Frahm. To stir emotions through well-orchestrated musical choices is William St Hugh.

Romanian artist Kamarius, a world fusion of spiritual, meditative & cinematic sounds. We kick off this edition with Robert Schroeder’s new release, ‘Into The Light’, drifting away into dream worlds by letting yourself be beamed into other dimensions with space effects, mysterious spheres, deep strings and dreamy melodies. 
Erik Wollo returns with an assemblage of acoustic guitars. Erik says everything you hear is acoustic, with no synths used on the new album ‘Cloud Of Strings’.
One musician who has graced our airwaves many times has been ELEON. His new album is a stunning atmospheric world of divine dimensions with guest musicians, including Grammy-nominated recording artist David Helpling.
Polypores returns for his second album on the Din label with ‘Multizonal Mind scramble’, a feast of modular textures and syncopated glitchy oscillators that swell and fade into strange sound worlds.  
On the female side, Lucy Claire produces a fusion of classical cinematic and world influences intertwined with bittersweet piano motifs.
Now and again, we like to look back into the past, this time with Airsculpture’s first album released in 1995, ‘Impossible Geometries’. In those days, this three-piece band’s performances were 100% improvised, greatly influenced by Tangerine Dream of the 70s.

Our lineup in this issue includes the third volume of their benefit compilation of Various Artists From Ukraine, now 19 months since Russia invaded with no end in sight. Ambient space music, performed by David Luxton, was inspired by astronomy and celestial themes. His mission is to make transcendent music from the inner and outer worlds. Modular synthesis Ombre Cohen experimenting with semi-modular synths and an ever-growing Euro rack case. The latest addition to the Winter-Light’s artist roster, a new ambient drone project, is created by Dan Barrett, a.k.a. Aetherium Nebula. His primary focus is manifesting atmospheres inspired by the intersection of sadness, spirituality and far-future cyberpunk science fiction. With her love of Africa, Lis Addison uses electronics, voices, and nature sounds on the album, which are intended to blend equally into the music the way all beings work harmoniously in an ecosystem for its health and benefit, and our vintage track from Harvey Bainbridge surfs the ambience of deep space music, just a few of the varied genre of sounds you will hear.

After several years buried in books, manuals, patch cables and messing with a DIY synth, JakoJako (real name Sibel Koçer) was playing her first live sets in Berlin, spending every spare cent on Eurorack modules. The trio Emeralds with soaring sounds stylistically indebted to deep German electronic music pioneers. ACTIVE DARK FILAMENT is a Canadian electronic music artist creating textured cinematic compositions, often containing a narrative edge. Like nearly all of Inquiri’s music, there is a distinct element of heartache mixed with hope, elements of drone voice field recording and intense layers of sound to draw in the listener.  From The Mouth Of The Sun is on a mission to bring its dynamic breed of electro-acoustic classical music to the masses this year. 'Seabuckthorn' is a guitarist meticulously putting together layers of overdubs, richly textured percussion and brooding reverb-drenched atmospheric sounds, lastly, White Noise From Electronic Toys creating music to calm down your mind during difficult times or to help you relax when you need it.

Sequences Podcast No 242

Those who join us for the first time on Sequences are Terminus Void’s ambient music from Seattle-based American musician. Peruvian avant-garde artist Manongo Mujica uses a fusion of electronics and cello percussion, creating a sound montage of immersive, hypnotic atmospheres. Two from Projekt, Alain Elettronico remixes from the label’s artists, uptempo melodies & rhythm-driven tracks and Swedish composer Henrik Meierkord, who uses the cello as his main instrument to create minimalistic ambient pieces. The View From Vega, an unashamedly vintage-sounding album in all its analogue glory from Ben Edwards, better known by his pseudonym Benge, has six tracks that slowly unfold their oscillations in organic melodic soundscapes. Ice Planet 9000’s track ‘Great Cloud’ is a celestial odyssey featuring cosmic soundscapes and music that ascend through a swirling super-massive nebula. We leave you with our two female musicians. Anna Wall’s album ‘Dream Theory’ is about music connecting to our conscious and subconscious mind, exploring sounds across the ambient and experimental spectrum, with Maddy Briggs, an electroacoustic composer based in Sydney, recycles organ and piano recordings as a living, breathing sonic atmosphere.

This month’s first edition will be our last podcast featuring a full lineup of different musicians, with the finale for this year just before the Christmas holiday, another special on a well-respected band and their various solo and other projects.

We are back with a more upbeat selection here, including melodic sequential music and several Berlin School-influenced tracks. Only one new name, B. Ashra, to add to the roster of the thousands of musicians/bands we’ve introduced over more than 30 years. We include two of his recent albums, which span ambient music’s dark & light side with meditational & ritual overtones.
Talking of dark ambient, Vidna Obmana’s Dante Trilogy is a collection of his early 2000 albums Tremor Spore & Legacy.
Kamarius, with his ritual, mystical sound, relaxing and enigmatic atmospheres. Pioneers of French electro,\ Space Art with ‘Personal Duty’, mastered by the legendary Michel Geiss and Dutch musician Remy’s most conceptual project, including a ten-piece choir.
Steve Hillman has been in this scene with sequential and progressive electronics for 40 years. We’ve included his latest  ‘Sunsets Of Summers Past’ converging on the prog rock side.

Happy New Year to all our friends & listeners from the team, Mike, Andy and, of course, our host, Karen. 
Moving house over Christmas has been a busy time for me. Now in temporary accommodation with my daughter & son-in-law before another move later in the year back to the UK.												
Since starting Sequences in a cupboard (yes, you heard it right) with just a cassette machine, I have come full circle being back in a cupboard again while most of my possessions are in storage with just one trusty Mac computer to work on.

This edition will be the only podcast for this month due to the upheaval of the last few weeks. I managed to put together a two-part podcast—the first session featuring sequential, cinematic, neo-classical music and Berlin School. Part 2 delves into ambient light & dark, symphonic, world and even experimental noise.

It’s with a heavy heart that I must say goodbye to a good friend I’ve known for several years in the electronic music scene, Wolf Red, who passed away just before Christmas, and at the beginning of this new year, we lost Greek musician IASOS, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the New Age music genre in the 70s

It’s good to see we are represented by several new female musicians. The stillness and vulnerability of Lyndsie Alguire’s music, the re-release of Danielle Boutet’s 1985 album Pieces, which borders Chanson spoken-word jazz noir and minimalism, with Claire Deak’s solo work is heightened by her experiences building unique sonic worlds and swaying atmosphere. Steve Roach’s ambient classic Structures Of Silence is celebrating its now 40th anniversary with a beautiful remastered limited edition LP, 1CD & two bonus discs created in 2013 on the 3CD deluxe edition. The Feminine Touch Vol 2

This edition welcomes The Soviet Space Dog Project with atmospheric experimentation into a full-flight sequencer fest. René G. Boscio is an LA-based Puerto Rican composer best known for his unique blend of acoustic and Latino instruments with modern experimental electronics—deep ambient music from Poland by Stefan Weglowski. The album ‘Paradoxum’ outlines Matteo Cambò’s musical journey and presents itself as an invitation to explore the fusion between human experiences, sonic experimentation, and enchantment.
Synthesist Tim Stebbing was part of the league of UK’s DIY electronic music artists in the mid-80s with a new single, ‘Gnome Sequence’, 10 minutes of sequencing Berlin-style, arpeggiation, and synthesised washes of sound over the top. Deep space German artist Matthias Lehmann has masterfully mastered different styles of electronic music over the last 50 years.

The girls are certainly making their impact on this edition, together there are five solo & two collaborative projects. There’s experimentation & passion in the music which ranges from chill-out to abstract ambient, hazy downtempo to cavernous drone spaces, with a special mention to classical reinterpretations by Murcof & Vanessa Wagner, especially on the beautiful moving Valentina Silvestrov work, ‘Farewell O World, O Earth’.
Sequencer lovers can drool over the latest Cosmic Ground album, number 5 & the duo Joorg Erren and Christian Steffen new outing, going by the name of Grobek.
It’s been awhile to see Frank Makowski of Ramp, offering a new solo concept album ‘Canon O Eclipses’, inspired by Austrian astronomer Oppolzer, in the genre of experimental neo -classical music. Another musician who we don’t hear enough of, New Zealander Rudy Adrian, brings us his new release, ‘Woodlands’, slow evolving melodies, harmonically rich textures, subtle ambiences & otherworldly vocal effects. Having a short sabbatical from Tangerine Dream, Thorsten Quaeschning teams up with Paul Frick, on ‘The Seaside Stage Sessions’. Well known figure in the UK’s electronic scene Mark Jenkins gives us three new albums, ‘New Inventions for Electric Guitar’, ‘KrautNoise’ & ‘Influences’, his take on the music of Manuel Gottshing, Mike Oldfield, Jean Michel Jarre, the Orb, Keith Emerson, etc.

Let's start with a bit about ourselves. We published an audio/magazine called Sequences for nearly twenty years and at the beginning of 2012 started podcasting on iTunes & more recently on Mixcloud & Soundcloud.  We publish two editions each month,  approx 3hrs in length.
I have been in Electronic music for over 50 years now, from the early experimental sounds of Karl Heinz Stockhausen, the German scene in the 70s with Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Robert Schroeder, etc through to some of the more modern, trance, chill-out, ambient music, although we stay away from techno, house, dance and the more pop-orientated stuff.
