Summertime Mixtapes

Throughout my career, I’ve created (or co-created) some iconic mixtapes.  Viva La Hova.  Dillagence.  Ready To Boom.  That mixtape with Adele.  And of course, the Summertime series with Jazzy Jeff.

But this one here (probably my last ever mixtape, to be honest) is special.

The music.  The concept.  And even the origin story.

Recently, I was blasting Jay-Z’s The Blueprint in honor of its 20th anniversary.

My fiancé Carolyn was upstairs playing lots of Beyoncé to balance out the incessant amount of Hov playing in my office.

At one point, both playlists synced on beat and my mind was blown.

My first thought: THIS SHOULD BE AN ALBUM

I called up my creative partner Chi Duly (the most talented musician I know) and we fleshed out the idea for this project.

I dug up all the classic Blueprint samples (and some other classic Jay sources, as well).  

Chi acquired a bunch of Beyoncé acapellas.   And then we got to work.

23 songs.  All songs produced exclusively for this tape.  These are not deejay blends.  This is original production using the original samples with lots of other fun things added in.

(And, of course, some rare and timely Jay-Z verses sprinkled in for good measure).

I’m not sure if we will ever get The Carters, Part 2.

But until that day… we have something just as good. :)

This is the most creative thing I have ever been a part of.

Fresh off Viva La Hova, MICK (formerly Mick Boogie)  is back with his rendition and interpretation of UK songstress Adele’s latest album. 19 dropped January and it made some noise with her hit single “Chasing Pavements”, which garnered multiple TV appearances as well as 4 grammy nominations at this years awards. 1988 features production from The Kickdrums, 6th Sense, nVMe etc. and guest appearances from Big Pooh (of Little Brother) as well as Naledge (of Kidz In The Hall). Busta had a bunch of unreleased Busta and Dilla collabos in the stash… and we thawed them out, remastered them, added some special guests… and voila… instant classic.  Dillagence!

This is the intro (produced as an ode to Dilla by the legendary DJ Spinna).

This mixtape is a love letter to the hiphop we grew up listening to. This is for the people who grew up analyzing the b-side of every Gangstarr and Group Home single. This is for the people who listened to Jay’s “A Million And One Questions” a million and one times.

This is music you should only listen to wearing Carhartt jackets and wheat Timbs. Do not listen to this album at a beach under a palm tree. This is music for a cold, grey day. Preferably enjoyed in a 1994 white Lexus. This is raw and uncut Brooklyn hiphop in it’s prime. A tribute to two of the best who ever did it, and in a way only we could bring it to you. We hope you enjoy this as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
