For a while now, I'd been wanting to write a "home away from home" kind of song, inspired by my own experience and the experiences of Filipino friends who have found love abroad with non-Filipinos. But early on, finding inspiration was a struggle. My initial idea, a list song about an American significant other getting into Pinoy culture by doing things such as making spaghetti with ketchup and hotdogs -- because, yes, non-Pinoys, we do that! -- cute as it was, felt pretty generic and unexciting to me. 

But as soon as the image of a couple flying back from the Philippines after a one-month vacation there popped into my head, things just flowed. The letter in the title is fictional, but I could have very well written it on the flight back to the East Coast after the first time Jeremy traveled to Manila with me in 2014. 

With this song, I hit two birds with one stone: one new song for "On This Side of the World", my song cycle inspired by the Filipino immigrant experience in the United States -- and a much-needed feel-good one, at that, after "Sunday Afternoon"! -- as well as a first anniversary gift to Jeremy, my home away from home.

in Barcelona, Paris, or Rome --
but you’d said: “Let’s summer back home.”

you spent whole afternoons beside me, lying by the sea.
And though
it wasn’t quite your sense of fun,
you scrambled through the schedule I had crammed so crazily,
never implying that you wish you hadn’t come.
You must have been dying as you pinballed from
the endless meet-ups and traffic jams
to learning centigrade and kilograms.
But still, you kept saying: “It’s so great to be home!”

Home,
where you ached from the twenty-hour flight,
and were stared at for being white,
where the billboards would screw up the view,
