This year, piano and coffee turns five, and to celebrate, we are releasing our first compilation: Realismo Mágico — a conceptual project featuring unconventional works by new and old friends we have made along the way.

Inspired by magical realism, an artistic genre in which realistic narrative and naturalistic technique are combined with surreal elements of dream or fantasy, this special release presents unheard material by twelve exceptional musicians — from experimental sound artist Martyna Basta to award-winning film composer Alexandra Hamilton-Ayres, and from poly-instrumental duo Brueder Selke to prolific pianist and producer John Hayes.

Each artist has contributed with a new track that invites the listeners to submerge into their very own musical universes, which, at the same time, have been re-shaped by their interpretation of magical realism. We start off on our journey with the delicate nostalgia of Tim Linghaus, passing through Jakob Lindhagen and Vargkvint’s modern take on the story of a Norse mythological creature, followed by the harmonic ambiguity in Simeon Walker’s pleasingly strong dialogue between felted piano and drums. Later on, John Hayes shares with us a chaotic composition born out of samples from an old clock in his parents’ garage and saturated voices, which precedes Lucy Claire’s processed hydrophone recordings of seaweeds and starfishes in Australian waters. Ondes Martenot, pump organ, zither, analogue synthesizers, vocal processing, musical saw, and bowed gongs are some of the unusual elements to be found on this eclectic yet coherently unified record.

Realismo Mágico has been conceptually crafted and musically curated by Peruvian composer Sergio Díaz De Rojas, and beautifully depicted by illustrator Jordan Amy Lee and graphic designer Celia Fernández González.

Marsen Jules releases 24hour long track on USB-flash-drive

Marsen Jules just released a 24 hour long version of his track „The Endless Change or Colour“ on a limited usb-flash-drive. The generative ambient composition was originally released as a 42 min long CD on Taylor Deupree´s label 12k. The piece is based on three samples of different time length which are looped into a sounddesign-set-up that constantly changes on many different layers. This composing technique called phasing, was first used by minimal composer Steve Reich in his composition „It´s gonna rain“ and later inspired Eno to his generative ambient concepts. Using the idea of phasing to the extreme Jules composed a constantly changing environment that creates unique moments over hours. A musical richness of which the CD version could only show an excerpt. With the new 24 hour version Jules wants to give the listeners a chance to explore the deepness and ever constantly changing quality of the piece.

The 1.440 hour long track comes on a limited edition full metal USB flash drive with laser gravure packed in a black magnet-box with silver imprint. The drive contains a 2GB MP3-file in 320kbps. All copies will be hand-numbered. It is currently sold for 39,-€ plus shipping on the artist website.

Like everything, 'In The Lens' has been shaped by its past, the music recovered from the garbled intestines of a decades-old hard drive and previously lost emails that were, over the years, left to wallow in discontinued, withering accounts. Forlorn and forgotten samples that were recorded on cassette dictaphones shed a gentle light on Solo Andata’s musical lineage, but in this new era fresh elements appear alongside these re-worked sounds. As a result, the music has both a contemporary and a lightly dated feel to it, like memories shrouded in orbs of present moment dust...

"Requiem for 2016" is exactly as the name suggests: a lament for a year of pain, disillusionment and turmoil for countless people around the world. As the world seemingly teeters on the edge of environmental and socio-political disaster, we offer this wordless hymn in the hope that 2017 does not continue in a downward spiral.

"Requiem for 2016” was written and recorded in one day in June of this year. Coincidentally, the day happened to be that of Brexit. As news came in of the United Kingdom’s spectacular decision, we went to a local bar for a couple of glasses of wine sharing sentiments of shock and dismay with patrons. Later, we recorded this with no idea of how much more gloomy the year would get.

Let’s pour one out for 2016 and raise one to a brighter future.

Metamorphosis Two, from Philip Glass' Solo Piano album composed in 1989. It was inspired by the 1915 novella The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Part Two is also the theme from the film The Hours and is also used in the film The Thin Blue Line (Houston Skyline).

The instruments are a Clavia Nord Piano 3 using a sampled Steinway Model B grand piano, with reverb, delay, and some synth, as well as an OB-6 analog synth.

This song is entirely based on vocal recordings that were processed by using a sampler, based on granular synthesis. All sounds that you can hear are our voices being stretched, squeezed, cut, pitched and sent into an fx chain.
