A dream of Pian.

I was hiking with my friend Han in a big mountainous landscape. We followed a green path until suddenly, a wooden door appeared in front of us.

We knocked, and the door was opened by a blonde tall western looking man holding an Asian looking baby.  We spoke different languages, but somehow we could understand each other. He lead us to a village. 

This village was really organic and had no electric or high technology. the people from the village were really surprised to see us. They told us that they had never seen people come in from that door before. They received us with their enthusiasm and even hosted a campfire party for us.

At night, we stayed in a room full of handmade furniture. Suddenly, wolfs howl could be heard. The howl seemed to be getting closer and closer. We were scared, so we hid in a wooden closet and were silent for the whole night. 

When the sun rose, the howling disappeared. We left the room, but we couldn’t find anyone to say goodbye to in the village. There was still some food and drinks left for us. We took those with us and walked out from the wooden door. 

When we turned back, the wooden door disappeared, like it never existed. We only had the food and the drinks in our hand to remind us, that night wasn’t a dream.

And I woke up.

Why Are The Flowers So Red?

This piece was inspired by a visit Pian made to a zoo. As she walked through the exhibits, she came across a lion enclosed in a large cage. The lion was majestic and powerful, yet confined and subdued. What struck Pian most was the expression in the lion’s eyes—not wild or aggressive, but filled with sadness and desperation. In that quiet moment, Pian felt a deep, unspoken connection, as if the lion were silently asking to be seen, to be understood.

The image stayed with her long after she left the zoo. She kept thinking about the emotional lives of animals and what it must feel like to be taken from the wild, placed behind bars, and made to live a life that strips away instinct and freedom. This experience sparked reflection on the way humans treat animals and how rarely we consider their inner worlds.

When she sat down to compose, she knew she wanted to tell this story from the animals’ perspective. The piece imagines the emotional landscape of captivity—the confusion, the sorrow, the fading memories of freedom, and a quiet, resilient hope that refuses to vanish. The music moves through shifting emotional states, giving voice to what Pian saw in the lion’s gaze.

This composition is her response to that moment—an attempt to express the inexpressible, and to create space for listeners to feel what words often cannot convey.

A romantic fiction story.

A man falls in love with a woman in a historic painting. The man decided to time-travel to the past to find her. Here he found the painter who created the painting. The painter told him that she was a lady from a royal family in San Macro and that he made her portrait before she died.

After hearing this, the man time-travels again and again until finally, they met. They fell in love and spent all the time in the world together, but they knew that she would die really young.

As an attempt to heal her, they decided to make one last risky time-travel to the present, so that they would have access to modern health care.

Modern jazz with influences from classical and oriental music, Micro Oxygen truly brings a unique mix of styles to the table. Under the direction of Pian Vane, a Cantonese pianist and composer, beautiful narrative compositions are made that you can easily be drawn into.

The word “narrative” is meant in a very literal sense here. This can be clarified in the band’s distinctive composing process. Each song is based on a story. The story is created first and from here a composition emerges. This results in a style that feels very much like a cinema for your ears. Each song tells a story about a moment, a dream, or a life experience.

The distinct sound of Micro Oxygen is influenced by the colorful modern jazz sound of Aaron Parks and Brad Mehldau, but Pian’s cultural background and her interest in romantic composers like Chopin have had a big influence as well. Saxophonist Gregor Oehlmann, bassist Wolf van Gemert and drummer Joey Schins each bring their own touch to the music.

As an emerging modern jazz quartet, Micro Oxygen quickly became a visible contribution to the live music scene in the region. From competitions to jazz festivals, presenting their music at culture venues all the way to playing at Jazzout Fest Limburg (sharing stage with Cory Wong and Gallowstreet), Chique Festival, Kiosk Concerten Festival, JazzContest Mechelen, Jazz Shanghai, Les Temps Mêlés and continues to grow a fanbase with their live
