07. The Sound of Stone (Omar Ahmad Remix)

This is a mix I've sat on for a long time - nearly an entire year! On a hot August day of biking many, many miles, some incidental sweaty hijinks, and after completing work on Sympathies VII earlier in the day, this was recorded during a rampaging late-night mix session at the then still-fledgling Bounce House, Philadelphia. All alone in the sweltering warehouse space, I used the usual dancefloor speakers as overkill booth monitors and romped, recording three mixes in one night, ending with this one. 

This is, in some ways, me operating at my finest, or at least showcasing my best tendencies as a DJ: a wide range of genres, intentional progression in energy and between genres, deliberate selection, seamlessly executed eclectic stunts, a flow-state of three of four decks. It's also special to me because I happened to recreate one such dramatic stunt that I improvised when I had played in NYC earlier in the year for my Mild Fantasy record release party during a particularly emotionally turbulent period of life. The gaping dramatic, emotional moment on the dancefloor shockingly didn't clear the crowd - something that has been instructive for my growth as a DJ. 

This mix is deliberate and methodical in progressing through vibes and genres, beginning with a gentle atmospheric bath and moving into bass and wiggly  material and sunshine-y rollers before settling into a full-tilt 3+ deck techno firestorm and easing back out into some surprises and delights. expect (or don't!) wormhole techno, drum & bass, dubstep, a handful of originals, and even a glint of hyperpop.

Not only is this the first post for Research & Development of 2024, it is our very first live set to be published as part of the mix series!  

Los Angeles-born Ole Mic Odd (aka Michael Padgett) grew up surrounded by jazz and rap music before moving to the east coast and becoming obsessed with vinyl. After DJing at parties and bars for years – spinning everything from dub/reggae and funk to krautrock and minimal wave – he finally discovered techno and picked up a few drum machines. 

Influenced by cult Dutch electronic labels, Detroit electro, Miami bass, early Chicago and P-Funk/G-Funk, Michael's music and performances are driven by hardware electronics, live recordings and improvisation. His high-energy live sets weave together techno, acid, electro, house, synth-wave and jakbeat styles, while his recordings range from acid electro and jackin techno to stomping house and ambient synth improvisations.

Michael has released on Kraftjerkz, Source Material, Zement, Dead Channel, Natural Sciences, New York Haunted, Another Perspective, Hilltown Disco, Clan Destine and Up North Records, among others. He has releases forthcoming on KRI Records, Zonate and Jungle Gym Records.

Microtones is pleased to announce its first full length release from Maro Kariya, aka Otodojo. The Sound of Stone was inspired by freezing landscapes coupled with Kariya's feeling of dread from dystopian visions of war and a warming climate.

The album begins with the cinematic "Galena Virgae", a sonic story about galena, an important mineral for the auto industry in the form of lead sulfide for batteries. The mineral covers mountains of Venus as snow, and Kariya imagines it in the planet’s atmosphere mixed with sulfuric acid as virgae. Galena's crystals exhibit beautiful octahedral forms and have been used for millennia as an eye cosmetic to reduce sun glare as well as an insect repellent. Despite its beauty and utility, galena has been a bane to many, including those in parts of Detroit, due to its toxicity. This conflict of galena as both the source of automotive movement (and subsequently techno) and as a poison to the people who are subjected to it is conveyed in the track’s contrasting elements; like delicate high desert pebble and plant glitches peppering heavy war-like drums and dissonant bowl progressions.

We are then immersed in the snow-laden rocky shores of The Sound of Stone which serve as a place of reflection for Kariya's experience in the Tohoku Daishinsai, with organic instrumentation, a textural poem, and vocal layering inspired by the late Ryan Karazija of Low Roar.

Temperatures drop to the glacial pace of Hyouzan with an icy generative composition. The polar intermission gives us a short window to prepare for Toketa Kaiyou, or Melted Ocean, which sucks us into the depths of Kariya's tryptan-induced paranoia of possible futures. These dystopian visions become HD within Another World, as we pass through a fiery hellscape with heavy industrial synths and spellbinding lyrics from the poet Matsunaga Teitoku (1633), accounting the sky's appearance during the New Year of the Tiger sometime in the Edo period.

The album concludes with Kariya’s wish for a positive aftermath to these dystopian visions through "Sea of Change”, followed by a soulful reinterpretation of The Sound of Stone by Omar Ahmad and a driving dance floor remix of Galena Virgae by Erik Luebs.

The cover photo was taken on a decreasingly rare occurrence when the temperatures shifted drastically, causing the recently drenched rocks to become frost-laden with a strange phase of ice.

"So I knew Jasmín could finish her set pretty much anywhere - from 130 techno to 170 drum’n’bass, I wanted to be ready to take over from anywhere. I put together blocks of roughly 10 records that all had a similar vibe/tempo: a block of hypnotic techno, a block of dubstep, DnB/half-time etc. And then I had transition records that could get me between each block. So on the night it was just a case of moving between the blocks in an order that made sense 😌"

Seb H. playing the closing set epitomises what we are trying to do at kinetic. Pair established artists with incredibly talented yet under the radar DJs, who totally deserve a space to perform. Seb's understanding of the emotional connection withe the dance floor & his records make him a truly special talent.

Changing (demo)

Central American born Silent Servant has performed worldwide in clubs from LA, Berlin to Osaka. A chance meeting with Karl O'Conner in 1999 would establish a friendship that would open the door to the Sandwell District label in 2006. Silent Servant's sound is a reinterpretation of early '80s post-punk electronics, paired with the deep, metallic sounds of Basic Channel and Downwards.
