Techno's Outer Limits - April 2017

More than happy to announce DSS 112.
Big Hands is the main moniker of the artist also known as Andrea Ottomani, Andrea Ottomani Nontet and Otto Von Lumi. Mainly known for his serpentine and labyrinthine electronic productions that found home on labels such as Al Wootton's Trule, Blank Mind, Vargmal and his own Baroque Sunburst.
In recent years, he has developed an intimate and personal electronic sound that owes as much to free jazz and psych-rock as it does to more leaden styles such as dub and techno.

About the set, Andrea said: "This is 50 mins with me and a pair of 1200s - super fluid, rough & jumping between genres. Let's all boycott Spotify."

DSS 112 | Big Hands

For the 30th Herbarium we are proud to present two special guests - @bambi__dj and @beatricem._bait. They brought a trippy dubby journey to the table, loaded with unique sound design and spacious grooves. We love the feeling when every detail sits in the right place as in their selection of tracks and elements. This creates an insanely immersive effect and hunger for more. Bambi and Beatrice M. chose the plant Mint (mentha) for their mix. 🌿

Here’s some insight about why they chose their plant: 
Bambi and Beatrice M.’s musical palettes intersect in a very specific zone, with some key words like psychedelia and dub. This can apply to the club interface, but as the summer surfs by, their need for freshness and a soothing soundtrack for the season translates in this mix’s selections. Therefore the choice of plant felt pretty intuitive : mint. A plant that stimulates several senses at once : its vivid green evokes lushness and renewal, its scent is sharp, almost cleansing, and its taste - cool, tingling, slightly sweet - lingers like an echo… Just like their selections, mint stands at a sensory crossroads - refreshing the body, teasing the mind, and awakening something just beneath the surface. 𖧧

About Bambi & Beatrice M.

Beatrice M. and Bambi are two french DJs who met through intersecting music circles, which is what their duo is all about. Take a venn diagram with on one side, Bambi’s library ranging from deep techno to trance to house to triphop, and on the other side Beatrice M. with mainly dub and dubstep. The crossing point of the two circles is always somewhat a little dubby, a little psychedelic, sprinkled with friendship and fun.

- heated up leftover lebanese food and made a sort of shakshuka with it
- hung out with my Mum, looking at family photos
- nursed a hangover, drove to northcote plaza and bought 6 donut holes

For our 15th episode, we’re honoured to welcome Blacklauren — a NYC-based artist whose sound merges deep techno with hip hop roots, experimental textures, tribal rhythms, and sci-fi atmospheres.

Shaped by the pulse of NYC’s 80s/90s hip hop scene and early exposure to Haitian Vodou, Blacklauren’s style is both grounded in heritage and forward-reaching. His sets unfold like journeys — hypnotic, layered, and rich with narrative.

This podcast is no exception: a morphing voyage through genre, rhythm, and space, connecting the raw and the refined, the ritual and the rave.

He’s the founder of the label Nyabinghi Electronic Research, with recent releases on Modern Minimal and his debut EP freshly out on The Bunker New York.

Tom aka Sub Basics has been humbly putting music into the world via Temple of Sound , Modern Hypnosis and more, for the last few years.  Personally, when I first discovered his tunes a while back, it was a no brainer to work with him on an EP. His  music somehow sits at the perfect junction of so many different genres, moods and styles I enjoy. A versatile and prolific producer. Super happy to welcome him to the Animalia family.

Don’t have many rules in life but one of them is that whenever a new mix by Pjenne comes out, to stop what I’m doing immediately and put it on. And probably am not alone here. 

Like many people, Pjenne’s mixes have been go-to’s, essential and always-classy additions to a landscape of noise and clutter. 

Like your favourite mix CD that never left the space•ship stereo. And no matter how many times you listen, it seems to get better and better with each play. They’re timeless, they’re crucial and the amount of care and love poured into each one is apparent as soon as you hear the first blend. 

Often compiled and cooked up over the course of a couple of years, they have the kind of craft and expertise that can only come from doing a weekly radio show for over 6 years, being a staple of her local Naarm scene and being an all-round legend. We’re pleased to report this mix is no different and has been on repeat since it arrived. 

Appreciate this is a bit of a gushy write up, but sometimes you’ve got to say it how it is, and anyone who’s a Pjenne Ultra will understand what a big day this is at space•lab HQ.

Token is pleased to announce Metabolism, the sophomore album from Sigha. The LP marks James Shaw’s third release on the Token label following his singles Christ Figures and Our Father. Metabolism represents an arrival: the artist offers his definitive statement on a production aesthetic that has been in development over the last few years.

Shaw’s work as Sigha has always placed the listener at a centrifugal point that invites a clandestine hypnosis rather than an abject hysteria. Cavernous low ends fixed firmly and effectively in a mono space tether the music to the body, while exquisitely executed white noise patterns and crystalline pads warp and hiss around the stereo environment. This keen ear for distinction within the frequency spectrum acts as the central theme on the LP.

Metabolism encompasses a power dynamism that departs from the explicitly greyscale finish found on his more conceptual work as Sigha and as A Vision Of Love for Guy Brewer’s Avian label. Though elements of Metabolism maintain a driven, corrosive quality, each searing sequence or mordant drum machine hit occupies its own space. On high-energy dance floor moments and abstract tracks alike, Shaw’s approach to distortion is one that sets out with an objective to separate components rather than to bind them. This creates a matrix of aural stimuli that remain heady and inherently propulsive, but are realised in a fashion more akin to high fidelity sound design than processes traditionally associated with the techno genre.

The record possesses a powerful musicality beyond this acute attention to form and structure. In the past, Shaw’s productions have often married high-energy drum work with subtly shifting minor keys spread around the sonic periphery. On Metabolism, emotive leads sit squarely and comfortably in the foreground, and build towards rapturous crescendos that are crisp and omnipresent throughout the mix. These careful layers generate the extraordinary tension that has since become a hallmark of the British artist’s work.

Metabolism is a techno album, but its frame of reference is generous, drawing on the finest facets of the artist’s own varied discography and the wider electronic music landscape. Cohesive and modern, Shaw’s latest work eschews a handful of riffs on a single idea in favour of a multi-faceted, fully realised expression of what the genre can be - it is a vital addition to the Token label’s already enviable catalogue of releases.

The artist involved were carefully chosen together with Wata Igarashi after some friendly exchanges during his last visit in Europe. We want to deeply thank Nuel, Yves De Mey, Orphx, Shawn O'Sullivan, r²π and Ruff Cherry for taking part to this project and giving their amazing contribute! As happened for the original Ciphers Ep, which included 2 free download only digital tracks, we decided also this time to give away two tracks: 'Cocytus' remixed by r2π, newborn collaboration of Ruhig, Retina.it and PRG/M and 'Displacement' remixed by the Ruff Cherry. We are also happy to announce that the vinyl finally comes with full artwork cover plus innersleeve (for those who know and complained that we saved on that so far). cheers!
