Episode 33 speaking to instrumental Techno producer CJ Bolland! He's realeased some of the most iconic electronic tracks ever made, including The Prophet, Camargue and Tower Of Naphtali - as well as doing a remix on the Prodigy's No Good single and many others for the likes of Depeche Mode, Orbital, Moby and New Order. 

He made the title track for the 90s clubbing film 'Human Traffic' - 'It Aint Gonna Be Me' with one of his greatest dancefloor tracks on the B-Side: Desolate 1. His track 'Sugar Is Sweeter' got the remix treatment from Armand Van Helden and became a worldwide dancefloor hit.  

We discuss his early influences, his musical journey and the people, studios and stories which formed his incredible and influential sound.

Episode 35, speaking to Dave Spiers of GForce Software who specialise in modelling vintage synths as virtual instruments - bringing classic synths such as the OSCar, MiniMoog, Mellotron and ARP Odyssey to life, while faithfully re-imagining their design.

He was behind the PhatBoy, a MIDI controller which completely changed the landscape of controllers for both home and pro studios in the mid-90s - bringing 14 knobs for tweaking parameters on your favourite synth and sound modules.  

As well as making award-winning software instruments, he recently produced a feature length documentary profiling eight companies with interviews and commentary from; I Monster, Michelle Moog-Koussa, Alan R Pearlman, Alessandro Cortini, Rick Smith, Karl Hyde and more.

He's produced records spanning multiple genres for the likes of Goldie's Metalheadz, Mike Paradinas Planet Mu and D-Bridges' Exit records - and has DJed the world extensively. He's also part of Dream Continuum and produces under the alias Phillip D Kick.  

Jim also started out as a turntablist and also worked in community music in his early days. He teaches Music Production at BIMM in Bristol and recently released a new album entitled Acid Dub Studies. Episode 39, speaking to Halina Rice - an electronic musician and composor, who's released critically acclaimed music over the last few years - fusing the worlds of electronic music, performance and live visuals. Her first release 'Redux' was  released in 2017 on Blurred Recordings with extensive press coverage and radio airtime. 

In 2020 she began a series called NEW WORLDS releasing tracks with their own virtual environments - described as "A sublime and infectious piece of electronic mastery" by Electronic Sound Magazine. Episode 40: Dave Clarke 

An extraordinary renegade talent, Dave's carved a career playing and making the finest underground electronic music charged with unrelenting energy and a punk ethos. Dave's influential album 'Archive One' was released in 1995 to critical acclaim - listed as one of John Peel's top 20 albums of all time. This was followed up with 2003's 'Devils Advocate' which continued to showcase his dedication to musical diversity laced with an incendury spirit. 

In 2001, he released the World Service Techno/Electro mixes, which are as integral to the scene today as they were then. He subsequently released a follow up before 'The Desecration Of Desire' came out in 2017. His live sets are legendary and have to be seen to be believed. Hear him play every week on his radio show for RTE which has over 800 episodes.

John came into the limelight with his band the Czars who started out in 1994. He released his first solo album 'Queen Of Denamrk' in 2010 which was named album of the year by Mojo magazine.  John has an immense ability to write heartfelt songs with a combination of profound and humourous themes. 

His subsequent albums 'Pale Green Ghosts', 'Grey Tickles and Black Pressure' and 'Love is Magic' have all showcased his talents as a supreme singer, songwriter and self-confessed synth-lover! His latest album 'Boy From Michigan' was released in June this year and sounds fantastic -  I highly recommend you see him on tour later this year!

Episode 42: Kyoka

Kyoka is a supremely talented sound artist and musician who fuses her love of sound with experiments in Physics, Neuroscience and more. She was the first female solo artist on the Raster-Noton label and had access to the EMS Studio in Sweden where she was introduced to Buchla synths.

She's known for her frantic, highly articulate sounds which combine foley recordings and fragmented vocals alongside a sporadic rhythm track. She was on the bill for the Warehouse Project in Manchester, curated by Aphex Twin, and she recently collaborated with Ian from Lakker under the name 'Lena Anderson'.

He's spent time travelling and recording in Norway, Madagascar and many far-flung corners of the planet - collaborating with his peers, contemporaries and fearlessly approaching his heroes. High Contrast aka Lincoln Barrett released his first record in 2001 and has since gone to be one of the worlds biggest Drum & Bass producers - Grammy nominated and with 6 studio albums to his name, a wealth of high-profile DJ sets and some of the most prestigious collaborations and remixes ever made - including Adele, Kanye West, Missy Elliot, Tiesto, FSOL, MJ Cole, The Streets and many more.

His latest album 'Notes From The Underground' traces his jungle roots with a fresh take on the sparse and sample-heavy tracks which inspired him in the early days. He is the first voice you hear in the Trainspotting 2 film, having released the incendury 'Shotgun Mouthwash' for it's soundtrack. Tim Wright has had an expansive career as a composor and sound designer working on video games as far back as the VIC-20. He later went on to score Lemmings, Shadow of the Beast 2,  and the era-defining Wipeout series while working at Psygnosis - where his tracks played alongside The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Orbital, FSOL, Photek, Leftfield and others. 

Post Psygnosis, he was part of Jester Interactive Limited who produced MUSIC - Music Creation for the PlayStation; a ground breaking music making program for the masses which was followed by Music 2000 and then MTV Music Generator on the Playstation 2.  He was also part of the eJay music software team, designing a new version of the dance & hip hop eJay music software for Empire Interactive.

Fiona Brice has a wealth of experience across a spectrum of musical adventures - from touring for 10 years with Placebo to creating arrangements for and performing with  the likes of John Grant, Anna Calvi, Jay-Z, Kayne West, Liam Gallagher, Kelly Jones, and many many more. 

She released her solo album 'Postcards From...' in 2016 on Bella Union, and there will be a follow up next year once the vinyl is ready to ship. She explains how she stays healthy on tour, what an orchestral fixer does, and what it's like to bridge the gap between artists and "classically trained" orchestras.

midierror meets... Jonny Amos [EP13] Pop Songwriter / Producer

The RATCHETEER generates MIDI note patterns working in sync with Ableton Live's transport with options for numerous time divisions and the ability to be performed using external MIDI controllers.

Assign a MIDI Note to ratchet and choose from 5 types of time division to hear the note re-triggered from a steady pace to rapid fire mayhem. Select an output velocity with fixed, random between a range or LFO controls.

Turn the knob or play your keyboard to play the ratcheteer at different speeds. It'll output expressive MIDI notes which can be recorded as clips and stored in your track.

The Ratcheteer is ideal for Trap Hi Hat petterns, but can be used on any drum or synth hit. It can also be used on multiple channels for entire rhythm track making.

Time divisions include triplets, whole notes, dotted notes, all combined and free (unclocked).

Use the MIDI Map function to change the ratchet using MIDI controller movements, from knobs, faders, mod wheels or pitchbend. You can also automate numerous elements to store within your track.

Send ratcheted MIDI notes to VSTs, Drum Racks or external MIDI Hardware using Ableton's extensive MIDI routings.  Say goodbye to meticulous MIDI finessing and start performing hi-octane hi-hat patterns!

METROSTEP is a programmable step sequencer which triggers MIDI notes in time with Ableton Live. Each step of the main sequencer represents a retrigger timing, with low speeds at the bottom and high speeds at the top. 

You'll find it instantly playable for many creative uses - particularly for creating hi-hat and percussive patterns. It's been specially designed to be used on multiple tracks so numerous instances won't conflict like with other Max4Live patches.
