He learned to play guitar at Kolts Accordion School
With money he earned shovelling icy sidewalks at 40 below
He picked up a red sunburst semi acoustic he bought second hand
His best friend Tommy said "let's play some Beatles"
Before they knew it they were a band.

Seems like only yesterday
But it's twenty years a thousand miles away
From the freezing winds at the corner of Portage and Main

At eighteen he bought a rusted van, flames painted on the side
Despite the duct tape and two bald tires they made it to their gig alive
Each night they played a song or two they wrote the night before
They took turns driving while he wrote the lyrics
Half asleep on the cold van floor.

Seems like only yesterday
But it's twenty years a thousand miles away
From the freezing winds at the corner of Portage and Main

They met Sara at the Copper Queen in Flin Flon
She said I'm a singer came up on stage to sing a song
They loved her voice could hear the crowd cheering on and on
She packed her bags said "Hold on boys. I'm coming along".

Their fan base grew they toured through the Prairies to the coast
They signed a record deal got a fancy tour bus then it all went up in smoke
Tommy's back home put his guitar back on the shelf
Don't know where Sara got to
