From Middlesbrough to Mexico; rising star Sahar follows up his Tong-hammered Paradiso release ‘Madi’ with a trip to the Naica mines, Chihuahua on Midnight People. This one goes deep… 300 metres deep.

Welcome to ‘Naica’. The title track sets the scene; the kick drum and galloping bassline drill deep into the earth striking synth-rich minerals that shimmer with emotion, tension and raw energy.

We drill deeper again to find the ‘Cave Of Swords’. The slower tempo creating a tension and smouldering intensity before we’re suddenly hit with extreme blasts of euphoric heat and light. Inspired by the cave itself where crystals as long as a metre exist, there’s a sense of adventure, danger and awe running throughout.

We drill even deeper again to find the ‘Crystal Maze’. Slower, moodier, even more intense and driven by a taut, sinewy siren, we’re now 300m deep in a cave where crystals over 12 metres long have been growing for over 10,000 years, slow-cooked to perfection in the extreme heat of mother nature’s finest magma. And the only way back to the surface is through the rising, dubby ripples of Third Son’s remix. Glistening like the crystals themselves, like the whole EP this takes us from Naica to nice, from underearth to underground, from magma to magnificent. Feel the heat.

Newcastle-born DJ and producer Pattn makes his debut on Midnight People with the release of 'Climbing Out' - a hypnotic, chuggy EP steeped in indie new wave nostalgia. Featuring Remixes from respected UK talent Sentre and Josh Ludlow (Make a Dance).

Following successful releases on the likes of Fabric Originals, Live at Robert Johnson and Reculture, Climbing Out has been two years in the making and also serves as the first time Pattn has recorded his own vocals.

We had a chat with James below:

What’s been your favourite gig to play?

My favourite gig has to be playing at a warehouse party in Los Angeles. The whole experience was amazing. Special shout out to the guys at 900 block for booking me and making me feel so welcome when I arrived. They are some of the most passionate promoters I have met and look forward to (hopefully) one day returning. 

Who are your biggest influences? 

If you know me or have listened to my mixes/recent tracks then you’ll know that I’m a sucker for that old school house sound. Pretty much anything stretching from the very origins of house to the early noughties. Artists like Grant Nelson, Inner Sense and Joey Musaphia have all inspired the sound that I’m working towards. 

Top tips for creativity in the studio? 

I’ve recently purchased an MPC 2000XL which is a dream. Don’t get me wrong the technology is dated (you have to load samples to a floppy disk drive) but being able to separate myself from the laptop and be physically able to punch in some beats is refreshing. It’s helped me come up with ideas that would never have materialised if I was still staring at a screen. 

Whilst I know that an MPC might not be in everyone’s price range there are definitely a number of cheaper alternatives to take at least part of your workflow away from the computer screen. Highly recommended. 


What track is your guilty pleasure?

Sonique - ‘It feels so good’ 

An absolute stone cold classic with a couple of decent remixes knocking about. Maybe a little bit cheesy but definitely can get people moving if used at the right time.

Monday Mix 001: SWALES

You've probably spotted @reesuk billed next to your favourite House & Disco DJs over the last year or so. Adam is making quite the name for himself; his style which floats through genres such as Disco, Italo & Electro; accompanied by his forward thinking mannerism has seen him launch his own label, embark on a US Tour and most recently release on Man Power's Ape-X imprint. 

We have a chat about his career so far below; and he delivers an hour of goodness for your listening pleasure. 

Big influences when it comes to DJs & Producers? 

There’s a few for various different reasons, anyone who knows me know’s I’m a huge digger and take a lot of pride in my selection so for this people like Palms Trax, Hunee and Orpheu The Wizard are DJs that have played a huge significance in my sound. As for more of a production level it would have to be Lauer and Skatebard, they hold so much consistency through all their work its incredible! But, the person I’ll always hold the upmost respect for is Gerd Janson, an outstanding DJ/Producer/Label Owner and amazing role model - an all round gentleman!

How did you make the leap from bedroom DJ to a US tour?

I believe networking is a huge key to moving forward in anything creative industry and was a huge part of making this happen! But of course it can only take you so far; long sleepless nights on my DAW, working on the label and generally building my brand all put me in a position for this crazy dream to become a reality.

Advice of getting your music heard by the right people?

Again, networking is the best thing you can do for yourself! Make some new friends, share music, support your local scene - don’t be afraid to put yourself out! Make enough noise and people will listen, identify where you want to be and back track on the steps to take to get there.

Closing track of an all night long set?

This changes like the weather there’s so much good music, so I’m going to cheat and say out of two, something boogie and balearic like ‘Daniel Wang - Don’t Go Lose This’ or ‘Fire Flight - Wantin U’

Monday Mix 002: REES

Meg Ward has been taking big steps to further her career recently, a huge debut EP which saw support from Haai on BBC Radio One and a string of big event bookings including London's Sphere with Topping & Skream has kicked 2020 of massively, let's hope the momentum doesn't stop.  She delivers a floaty chilled mix for our series, and below we talk all things Phenol House and Scran!

You recently released your EP! Tell us a little bit about the story behind Phenol House? 

Phenol house was a project I started working on at the end of last year. The aim of it was to create heavy hitting tunes with my own synths and samples. I didn’t want to follow a structure and fit into a mould of all house music already out today, so I just spent time playing with sounds until I got something that I felt was uniquely me. The intention behind each song was to evoke the feelings and emotions associated with club culture. Bringing people together. Smiling, loving, feeling the bass in your bones. I really enjoyed making that EP.

You’re always playing somewhere! What’s your top tip for getting gigs?

I’d recommend just speaking to people, making friends with people in the industry and expressing your interest with events companies. If you don’t get yourself out there and make yourself known, you won’t get about.

What’s on your dream rider? 

Depends how eccentric I’d be feeling haha! But definitely some proper tasty scran and a lovely bottle of whiskey. 

This mix contains 4 of your unreleased tunes! What’s your advice for finishing projects in the studio? 

It does indeed! From 2 unreleased EPs that I’m super excited about! Advice would be to do whatever you feel motivated to do. If you’re feeling more creative, get as many ideas down in rough form as possible. If you’re not feeling very creative, have a listen to some rough ideas that you’ve previously made and focus on more technical parts of production, like mixdowns and automation. But most importantly get into a routine of creating every day/ whenever you can. Not everything has to be something you want to release. You can’t finish projects that you haven’t started.

Monday Mix 003: MEG WARD

Charlie aka @SSSLIP delivers an hour of UKG summer heavy vibes and as his motto goes, he dishes up some flavours for the dance. We have a little chat about his label, currently influences and where he's heading when lock-down is over, below.

Some serious sounds from that mix; who are your influences from the current scene? 

I’ve been enjoying mixing garage flavours recently, there’s some really incredible sounds around at the moment. I’ve been spinning Holloway’s new release on Instinct a lot as well Main Phase’s release on Warehouse Rave. They’re both pushing such a dance floor ready sound that seems to be evolving quite rapidly at the moment, and is definitely influencing my production, so I’m really excited to see what’s to come from both of them. It’s been inspiring to see Samurai Breaks explore sounds below 160BPM with his new project ‘Putting in Werk’ which has a lot of heat on. And, as always, Special Request and Sully continue influence my mixes and production. 

Your label Slippery Sounds is coming along nicely, tell us a little about the ethos and future plans? 

It’s been a great first year for Slippery Sounds, from Disdained’s release ‘La Cuisine’ to having a show on Balamii, I feel like the labels ethos ‘Flavours for the Dance’ is being heard through the airwaves. It’s the labels first birthday in May, so to celebrate, on May 1st ‘Flavours for the Dance Vol. 1’ is being released. I asked friends of the label to contribute a track; a flip of a famous song, or a bass heavy stepper, to get all the ravers singing along. It’s a sort of manifesto to look at moving forward - displaying the true ‘slippery’ sound. It’s sounding amazing so can’t wait to share that with everyone! Fingers crossed that the planned day party to coincide the release, with all the artists on the compilation going b2b2b2b, goes ahead given current circumstances. There’s also a few EPs on the way this year that you’ll hopefully get to hear through sound systems in summer, varying in genres, but all providing dance floor ready heaters! The label’s guest mix series ‘Slippery When Wet’ has had a lot more submissions recently so you’ll definitely be seeing and hearing more on that front. 



We all can’t wait for this madness to be over; what would be your perfect line up be for that first rave back?

I actually got asked to play at Percy Mingle Vol.7, which is one of my favourite events at my favourite venue MOT 18. Unfortunately it’s been postponed but it’s definitely a dream line up for me - Coco Bryce and Riz La Teef headlining, Bluetoof b2b Benton and I’ll be going b2b with Slum Shady who’s lined up to release his debut EP on Slippery Sounds in the next few months. You can hear one of his tracks, Move The Most, in the Midnight People mix.

What's on the cards for 2020? 
 
I had previous plans to travel to Europe this year, to DJ some shows with my friends but its postponed for now. Since I have all this extra time now I've been working on music a lot, so I wanna drop an EP soon.

What's your tips for staying motivated during these times?

Everybody is dealing with the same stuff right now, and you have to keep in mind that this won’t last forever. Think of all the things you wanted to do that you couldn't before because you didn't have enough time. Now all we got is time, and it’s important for me to stay creative for my mental being.

Monday Mix 008: CODE ABI

Lisbon born, UK based DJ - SOUNDS.LIKE.CHRISTIAN, delivers an hour of Italo, Indie Dance and Disco sounds to our Monday Mix series. We also have a catch up below:

So how did you get into DJing? What inspired you to get behind the decks?

My best mate Cam invited me out to a Pleasurehood event at XOYO for his birthday. I'd never been to any sort of event/rave before that. I'd never seen a dance floor connect so much with each other and with the music being played. From that day on, I knew I wanted to get into DJing, to one day be the guy getting people to dance, and create special moments with their friends. So I'd have to thank Cam for taking me to that night!

What were you influences for this mix? 

When me and my girlfriend first started seeing each other, she sent me some of Palms Trax's legendary Dekmantel sets. His sound opened up a completely new world for me. Palms Trax, Todd Terje, Tiger & Woods are particular artists I've drawn inspiration from for this mix which I dub as a 'retro future' kinda sound. The release of 'City Elastic' meant I wanted to do something that was a celebration of that sound too.

What was the last event you went to that really amazed you and why?

 I think the last event I went to was special because well, we don't know when they next one will be. Big Miz and O'Flynn supporting Dusky at their residency at XOYO (you can see it's a place I go to a lot haha). Dusky dropping 'Amongst the Gods' to a packed crowd at 3.30am. Definitely one of those goosebump moments.

The Midnight Sound 001: VANITY PROJECT

Halcyon Wax co-founder Roo delivers an all vinyl, house inspired mix as our Monday Mix series continues. We also have a chat about records, Halcyon Wax and how the music industry needs to grow to address it's diversity issue.  

1.) A very impressive vinyl only mix; how long have you been DJing, when did the record collection start?

Thank you, it's a mix of all my favourite sounds from Balearic to deep house, disco & Japanese house!

Vinyl has been a very recent hobby. I've been collecting records for about a year but as I was hopping between internships and part time jobs, I didn't really have the money to finance it. So when I eventually landed a full-time role, I FINALLY after 4 years of DJing, upgraded from my DDJ SB controller - and bought myself some Technics. I think there's something very special about the feeling of playing records, although ironically, I'm not so keen on some of the environmental implications, so I like to dig and buy older tunes or tunes that are only pressed on vinyl as much as I can.

2.) Tell us a little bit more about Halcyon Wax? How it formed?

So it was actually formed after we went to Dimensions in 2018, which was genuinely one of the best weeks of my life. Me and Oli had been chatting about starting up a project for a while and were on very good vibes after the festival finished so we started putting the website together. I like to think that's it's a pretty laid-back site which channels a 90's rave kinda vibe in appearance - shouts to Mia for creating the raving figures on our home page - and which explores electronic music in lot of varieties as mine and Oli's taste can vary quite significantly. I also try and explore article topics that haven't been touched upon, or have on a very small scale, in the industry. So for example, I did an article looking at visuals and lighting in electronic music - something I think personally gets very overlooked - and interviewed some local collectives. It's really about exposing talent that we love and believe in. 

3.) What changes would you like to see from the industry, do you think there's a lesson to be learned from current issues that are present in the world right now?

Yes, I think this year is definitely going to be one of the history books!

Firstly, the Black Lives Matter movement has revealed lots of underlying and systematic racism which has been bubbling under the surface for years now, not just in the music industry, but everywhere. I find it baffling that people don't believe that racism still exists. I think it's also revealed the lack of diversity in the industry something which is actually very ironic due to the fact that electronic music is absolutely rooted in black culture. Diversity is definitely something I've been actively pushing for. As well as Halcyon I co-run the female and non-binary collective Shifting Spheres with Romy in Manchester, and our aim is to help push womxn into the industry through running DJ workshops and teaching basic DJing skills. It's amazing how many great collectives there are now for these groups, London's Sisu and Birmingham's Selextorhood I am also a part of yet, there is still lots more that we can do (myself included). As well as womxn, there is a great need to encourage and expose POC precisely due to the lack of diversity in the scene and the fact that there's so much talent out there. Also, apologies, but it's boring seeing the same DJ's all the time.

As Halcyon Wax we have learnt a lot and recognised that there is SO much more we can do in this area as its dominated by white identities. We are now trying to actively incorporate that into the website going forward. Shifting Spheres wise, we have our first release as a label coming out soon with all womxn producers, very excited about this and the tracks are incredible. We are donating all profits to Southall Black Sisters, a UK based charity which fights all forms of gender related violence against black Asian and African-Carribean women.

Monday Mix 014: ROO

Our mix series continues with one of our favorite personal selectors; a true digger, a genre spanning DJ who has hit the ground running and won’t stop. Yung Singh shows us his record box with an hour of Shazam-pending tunes...

Known for his reading of diverse crowds and genre fluid sets, Yung Singh has had a stellar 18 months. Kicking 2019 off by opening room 1 at fabric he was soon made a monthly resident at XOYO with SNEAK, in addition to headlining their Halloween events at Corsica Studios. After supporting the iconic DJ Hype and receiving love from the likes of Donae’o and Ahadadream for his radio shows Yung Singh has moved from strength to strength and has added a regular slot with Glo at Egg to his roster. 

Not just content with shows in the UK, 2019 saw him play in Colombia and make his festival debut at ADE in the Netherlands. To add to his big club experience, he has also been hosting his own radio shows which sees him dig deep across a multitude of genres on Balamii, Keakie, Subtle Radio and Mode FM, alongside guest mixes on Reprezent, Vandelay and Threads Radio. 2020 has continued in similar fashion with a move up to headline sets at XOYO and Egg in addition to support for legendary names at iconic London venues such as Camden Assembly. 

Alongside these achievements, Yung Singh has been heading up the UMS collective based in East London. With it's origins based in a student society at QM University, UMS has hosted sold out events over the last 5 years across the capital and now boasts a large following.

The uprising London-based Midnight People is back! Curated by big honcho The Real Escobar, the British label finally releases the first EP of the year – and it hits hard. Italian musician, DJ, and producer Alberto Melloni (FREEDL026) debuts on Midnight with his “Dandelion”, a flowered piece consisting of two vibrant originals and two bright remixes made with love by virtuoso Johannes Albert and gifted REES.

Alberto Melloni has music at his core. Previously a guitarist and synth enthusiast as part of a touring band, now Alberto focuses on producing Italo-influenced and cosmic-infused themes directly from Northern Italy. “Viercho’s Wood”, the track we were solicited to review, is a peak-time selection with a sharp 80s touch and a strong Hi-NRG feel. Bleeby & Space Invader-like FXs and a Trance-inspired synth layer help set the mood. The intensity of this piece is something that we miss dancing to on a packed dance floor.
