Fair Shake - All Aussie mixes

Well here we are again! It’s been a few months now since our last Fair Shake and this one was worth the wait! Miss Gabrielle joins us for Fair Shake 011 showcasing an inspiring blend of local artists. We could talk for a while about this mix but don’t hear it from us, the following is from Gabe herself.

"The mix is heavily dominated by Melbourne artists or remixers. I’ve mixed some personal and political into the groove. I have selected not only tracks I love, but artists I respect, most of whom I can personally vouch for being legends, with several of the tracks still unreleased. Some great women producers on here of course and a couple of blokes too, some of the producers are POC, some white, some queer, some straight, some from north of the yarra some south - thus closing the greatest of all divides! In many ways, I feel like it really represents me and the community around me who I am stoked to celebrate.”

We first met Gabe when she played at one of our parties after being introduced by a friend. Her energy & vibe brought a spark to the dance floor that we were so happy to share. Gabe is a passionate contributor to Melbourne’s music scene, she is a cofounder of Vinyl Vixens, hosts Ibiza in September on Kiss FM and leaves an imprint on her community by mentoring female and gender diverse talent through her DJ Skills programme. Gabe said she was stoked to celebrate her community, and we are grateful we can play a part in helping her do so!

Fair Shake 011 - Miss Gabrielle

It’s that time again for a new mix, and for Fair Shake 012 we are so incredibly thrilled to welcome Sydney icon Kate Doherty. When we first listened back to this we were moved by the story this mix tells of hope and acceptance, sometimes beguiled by a false future, but often renewed through music and a sense of pride in Australia’s dance tapestry. It seems overwhelmingly fitting that those featured in this mix all come from Australian origins, as we experience the world alongside each other. As spring blooms, sit on the balcony, have a glass of wine in the sun and let Kate turn you into a believer that things are getting better. 

Face the unknown, a spiralling relinquish of power,
Acceptance of our miserly delegation in confinement. 
On our hands patiently, slowly cursing luck, 
we stand out the window and look upon the unflinching earth. 
Here it seems we stay, months weeks and cold hours drag us. 
But there is hope yet in our time, 
A glimmer of forthcoming encroaches, raises the spirit, 
raises a glass and toasts in a renewal of sunshine and bravery. 
Openings appear in the brooding air, prick and you shall pass.  
We are not born to die nor conceived to conceal
and we shall live again.

UK-based Electronic duo, Rein make their debut release on Needwant with Aphex-esque breakbeat dreamer, 'Yorker' which comes equipped with a remix from FEEL MY BICEP's, Hammer.

The track is otherworldly with dissected vocals which float above the instrumentation, creating a trance-inducing atmosphere whilst retaining dancefloor centric euphoria. Hammer takes 'Yorker' into an even clubbier territory with chunky kicks and colourful synth lines.

In a distant time, the earth revolves as it always did. In this age, bionics curate the masses, searching for stimulation is the motive of the heathens. In the recesses of Melbourne, everything has merged, synchronised and blended together. Hybrid is everything, technology, people, cultures and genres weld. Boroughs exist over and underground, scraping the sky as they drill deeper into the red rock. It is here, under the earth and towards the molten centre, that the psychedelic techno core of BDE’s Fair Shake mix spurns. Crowds form, jettison in from caverns, and writhe to the soundtrack of the times - join them.

We are stoked to welcome The Remedy Man to Fair Shake 15th edition for his true blue selection sizzle. This mix shares with us his slice of Straya, and takes us on a cruise through our blazoned bushland. One for the road, roll on by the big beat with a route running from the gong to the mountain, beach to fern, sand to snow. Come one come all for a trip down Remedy lane.

Fair Shake 015 - The Remedy Man

Gday! And welcome to the Fair Shake Express. 3rd Orbit and Softserve in the booth. Now, find space, alight the station, relinquish the body and let them pitch us through arcs of golden chaos.  

Conducting aural scores, they encourage movement instantly, we willing passengers impress without demur. It trains down errant tracks, bouncing along the sleepers, flashing glorious sounds and poking holes in rugged terrain. Powered by steam, it exhales, and shutters the limbs all four corners. 

3rd Orbit & Softserve host The Bleached Re-Cap on Area3000 Radio focusing on driving sounds from Naarm & surrounds, so we were super excited for them to join us and highlight artists and labels solely from the city they reside.
