Recorded with iPhone 5s in Jardín Botánica, site for Sounding Colombia, a workshop at the Universidad de Caldas, in Manizales, Colombia. Among the chorusing of frogs and city traffic a blue and green Andean motmot clucks a warning toward me. Later, a rufous-collared sparrow calls. Nearby, young people were rehearsing a physical theater performance.

A walk in Mexico City with Amanda Gutierrez and her mother Carmen Vazques in which they speak of the fear of femicide in Mexico, where 9 women are killed every day. The piece is part of my longterm "Shadow-walks" series, in which I retrace the person's walk solo, singing my impressions and memory of their walk.

Getting to experience the elk rut while visiting Rocky Mountain National Park is an experience thousands seek out each fall. The sound of their high-pitched bugles combined with the sight of males locking antlers, battling over mating rights is something most visitors never forget.

I present this recording of the rut from a slightly different perspective -- sitting in the middle of a herd of nearly 200 animals as they make their way from their nightly haunts in the middle of a mountain meadow to their day time gathering spots in the cool shade of the forest. The herd begins off to my left nearly half a mile away, but gradually makes their way to where I positioned myself at the forest edge, hoping they would pass by. Over the course of an hour, the herd headed right towards my location, some passing behind me within a few yards of where I sat, camouflaged among the dead fall. That morning is something I'll never forget and am proud to share it with you.

This recording was made at dawn on September 22, 2020 using a Sound Devices Mix-Pre 6 and two Sennheiser MKH20 omnidirectional microphones placed in a homemade binaural housing. In addition to the many sounds of the rut, which peaks halfway through with several elk passing right next to me and one even sniffing the microphone, you can also hear some distance road traffic and the early morning wind shaking the aspen leaves.

Middle of the Elk Rut -- Rocky Mountain National Park

A recording from central New York State (North America)of thousands of night migrating birds on the night of September 11-12, 2020. The most common calls are from 12+ species of wood warblers, Rose-breasted Grosbeak & Swainson's Thrush -  most all headed to Caribbean Islands, southern Mexico or Central & South America for the winter. The 6+ hour recording began at 9:45pm EDT. To hear the intricacies, crank the volume. WARNING FOR HEADPHONE LISTENERS: There are a few instances of very loud bird calls (ex. flock of Green Herons passing over at 0:01:45 - one minute 45 seconds into recording. Adjust your headphone listening level on this section before proceeding).

I made this recording using an "Old Bird 21c" microphone mounted on a 2.5 meter wood tower in the middle of a hay field. It contains the densest dark terrain (no artificial light), non-coastal, avian nocturnal flight call rate I have documented in 30+ years of monitoring such calls in North America. The original audio submitted to SoundCloud was a mono wav file, 22050 sampling rate, 16 bit resolution.

Big Migration Night

On the 11/21/2020 along with two friends I carried out a sound walk I’d designed for Hampstead Heath in North London. We chose not to record the sound walk and instead recorded our concluding conversation which was filled with reflection, ideas and observation. So here it is, a hot chocolate-filled dialogue between three friends, it rambles and wanders, much like the walk itself, but on the whole I think we concluded, we’d like to do it more often.
