Untukmu yang Berperang (to the Wars) is a song inspired by the narrative "Chedo" song tradition of the Fulani people in West Africa. The acoustic buzzing guitar effect, in repetitive pattern, was intentionally introduced to enrich the guitar's technique and sound color within a minimalist orchestral sound.

Man Without Country is a music and multimedia project lead by Ryan James.

After a two-year dormancy, Welsh native vocalist and musician Ryan James has returned with his most distinguished musical project; Man Without Country. An independent re-launch which comes with a digital, double A-sided release, aptly entitled ‘Lion Mind / Jaws of Life’. 

Originally formed in 2007 as a duo alongside co-founder Tomas Greenhalf, Man Without Country released two studio albums via Cooperative Music. This allowed the band to tour all over Europe and the US, often supporting the likes of M83, Alt-J, Warpaint and many others.

The new double A-sided release, which shows two contrasting sides to James' artistic vision, is now available via Music Glue (from August 21st). The release will also be available to listen on all streaming services, and to purchase from all digital retailers from September 18th.

The beat-driven ‘Lion Mind’ features the airy vocals of Finnish singer-songwriter Sansa, whose most notable work includes her collaboration with Kaskade on the track ‘A Little More’. ‘Jaws of Life’ exposes James’ introspective side, and showcases his talent for eighties-esque, synthesiser-based music production and beat manipulation, which could be compared to the work of Ulrich Schnauss, Apparat, or perhaps most recently the soundtrack to the Netflix original series Stranger Things.

James has also collaborated with platinum-selling Norwegian electronic music veterans Röyksopp. Their track ‘Sordid Affair’, featuring James’ hypnotic lead vocals was the first single taken from their 2014 studio album ‘The Inevitable End’, which debuted at number one in the iTunes electronic music chart. In June this year, Röyksopp released a re-issue of the physical edition of TIE, which includes an exclusive bonus track titled ‘In The End’, featuring a vocal duet by James and Susanne Sundfør.

First of all, my humble gratitude to all of you who have continued to support Man Without Country during times of silence. Clearly there have been some changes, as well as some difficulties along the way – but MWC has remained my “phantom limb” throughout. A new album is long overdue, and never have I felt more inspired and motivated to lead the task of making it.

In a bid to deliver the best album I possibly can I have teamed up with the excellent people at PledgeMusic. Your ongoing help and support during this project will allow me the freedom to release the album on my own terms, as well as make the creative process more interesting, and less isolating.

In addition, you will be the very first to hear new music. I will give you inside access to my creative process – revealing what I’m working on, who I’m working with, in real-time and as often as I can. The album’s theme has been established, and a number of tracks are already set to make the final running order. I have set the release date for August 22nd 2018 – exactly nine months from now.

An elegant, effortless mixture of acoustics and electronics, Miftah Bravenda’s “Comforting Presence” soothes the very soul. Instrumentally lush, the way the sound grows and washes over the listener gives it a regal quality. Stylistically it incorporates elements of classical, pop, dubstep, dance, glitch and more into a singular whole. Layer upon layer intermingles to create a vast sprawling scope that has a vividness to it. The usage of color feels particularly profound for the textures and tones brim with life. Rhythms opt for infectious grooves making sure it all feels acutely balanced for maximum impact. Vocals, when used, further emphasize a stately presence for they are delivered with so much passion.

Miftah Bravenda’s work brings to mind some of James Blake’s earliest pieces. Akin to those works these pieces are painstakingly crafted to result in gorgeous blooms of color. Going further out than this, the R&B meets folk-influence draws from Toro Y Moi’s body of work. When all these elements come together what results are a highly sophisticated, urbane album. Every piece builds and plays off the last, making it best to take the album in as a coherent cohesive whole one which sprawls about in a bright brilliant glow.

Things open on a high note on the fantastic “Home”. Here the initial piano work gradually transforms itself into a symphonic droning scope that has elements of shoegaze that rise to the forefront. “Fearless” reveals the first beats of the album, with a jazzy inflection leading the way as the song itself touches upon some of Beach House’s dream-pop atmospherics. Incredible grooves are taut on the spirited “Indecisive”. Sheer emotion rests at the very heart of “Adelline’s Thoughts”. A light touch on “June” makes it the highlight of the album for the vocals mixed with the yearning melody lend it a nostalgic aura. Poppy and playful “Faithful” bounces along with jubilant glee. With “A Restless Night” the album comes to a close in a reflective fashion.

“Comforting Presence” shows off Miftah Bravenda’s deft ear for melody with themes that linger in the mind long after the album has ended.

Miftah Bravenda is a brilliantly dynamic songwriter, musician and producer.

Having served up a variety of one-off songs and EPs and singles, each release divulges into this artists creative output in a different way. With a sound firmly routed in electronica, his songs can spear off into different directions. From post-rock inspirations to synthwave to ambient soundscapes, there is a lot of diversity but all anchored by his electronic sensibilities.

As with many other prolific electronic artists, Miftah Bravenda would be quite capable of penning an eerie at atmospheric soundtrack to a Danish crime series or releasing a ground-breaking album akin to his contemporaries like Jon Hopkins.
