“So picture this: 1988, I’m standing there with turntables like some sort of vinyl wizard, completely mesmerized by electronic music. But the obsession started even earlier - 1981, when I bought my first record. My collection kicked off with the classics: Afrika Bambaataa, Planet Rock, Whodini… you know, just casually starting with the foundation of hip-hop culture, no big deal.
Then along came Acid House, and BAM! First time I walked into an acid club, it was like a religious experience - except the church had strobing lights and everyone was sweating through their shirts. I knew instantly: this was my calling, my destiny, my reason for existing on this spinning ball of chaos we call Earth.
House music became my new disco - because apparently regular disco wasn’t weird enough for me. From there it was a natural progression to techno, because why stop at making people dance when you can make them question reality itself?
Of course, life had other plans. Family happened (as it tends to do), so I had to hang up my headphones for a while and become a ‘semi-DJ’ - which is like being semi-pregnant, but with more vinyl and fewer diapers.
But here’s where it gets fun: I loved doing live remixes with FOUR turntables. Four! While most people could barely handle operating a toaster, I’m over here conducting an orchestra of spinning plastic. Most folks back then couldn’t wrap their heads around it - they wanted to hear songs from start to finish, like some kind of audio purists. For them, a DJ was just someone who played records beginning to end with the occasional smooth transition.
Me? I saw those guys as glorified jukebox operators. Real DJing meant taking music apart and rebuilding it live, like being a mad scientist but with better beats and significantly less risk of accidentally creating a monster.“
