The Eternal Wave was played for the Asheville Movement Collective on Sunday, March 6, 2022. The inspiration for the set was to explore the wave progression commonly used in 5Rhythms and Ecstatic Dance sets and to deepen the structure so that there are waves inside of the waves. This helps to create a more dynamic stuccato and chaos with oscillating genres and moods to keep the dance floor very dynamic.

There are more songs with lyrics in this set than a typical 5Rhythms set. In this case the lyrics tell an important message that I wanted to share. It is a message of hope that embraces love, courage and freedom in a time of conflict and rebirth as winter fades and spring breaks ground.

New Growth

Rise up through tired winter beds,
A leaf or two at first, and then...
An eruption of yellow and green
The splendor of nature's birthday suit
Comes clean again.

The forest shows the way to spring,
this rebirth, will rebirth, our rebirth.
And so tired eyes rub themselves awake,
To plant naked dancing feet 
Upon this Evergreen floor. 

We as a community come side-by-side
Circled up, and ready to ride,
This wave, this journey, this cycle.
With nature as our guide,
Our rebirth, will rebirth, this new earth.

I recorded this set on April 3, 2022 for the Asheville Movement Collective were I reside as a facilitator and mix maker. The set was crafted with me pulling an all nighter the night before to design the wave and practice it, and then I played it live with a few adjustments to fit the vibe of the dance floor. 

All of the artist names and track titles are noted by me in the comments. Mahalo to all the musical artists and the many cultures that helped produce the music I use to craft this journey. 

I'm also happy to share a poem I wrote as an intention to this Sunday morning dance. Blessings to all those who honor the act of dance as medicine.

These simple words are the intention for this dance. 

I resisted releasing this set, because I held a lot of judgements about it. Over time those have melted away and a dear friend has reminded me to share my music and let it be.

Hi Friends, to help me get more listens I have a request. Pls listen, like and repost the mix, and leave me three constructive comments on what you liked or what could use improvement and I'll private message you the tracklist. Thank you for the feedback and engagement! It helps me get more listens.

I've often tried creating an ecstatic wave journey without any lyric heavy songs. It never ends up happening. I just love using songs with lyrics both in english and other languages too much. But for this mix I will restrict myself to only songs that have instrumentals, or I will cut out any lyrics. I'm curious how it might land for our dance community and the creative direction it might take me on. 

I'm always trying to evolve and adapt my craft as a music weaver, and an easy way to do that is to impose restrictions that force me into uncomfortable and uncharted territories. If you'd like to journey into such an exploration, I invite you to come to this dance. 

The invitation there for you as a dancer, will be to explore the messages you find in music that is devoid of words. And also, the invitation is to explore how creative restrictions can fuel your creativity and dance expression.

Instrumental Restriction - live @ AMC {Ecstatic Dance Set by MIKAYA}

Max and I met sometime around 2010-11 on the island of Maui both of us living with our dear friend Malka MaBlissa in Haiku. I remember him fresh out of college, young and bright, always doing pull-ups in the doorway, practicing the horn on the patio, smiling and eating healthy. Fast forward to 2023 and although his facial hair has grown out, as has mine, we both are very much the same deep inside at the core. On the emotional level, also both of us on a healing journey of the heart, and perhaps also still searching for both ourselves and our way to show up in this world, with out gifts and talents and instruments in tow. 

This set is a co-creation of our musical talents and sentiments as they stand today. I'm proud of where we have come, and the growth I've seen in us both. This was recorded live at the Asheville Movement Collective.

The intention was to tap into Love, Presence, and Breath through our dance experience with songs selected to induce trance states.

Loving Presence {Ecstatic Dance Mix by MIKAYA}

Recorded live on April 13th, 2023 at Asheville Movement Collective. The intention is to honor the passing of winter into the spring season where new growth, connections, and directions abound. This is a time to reflect on those things that have passed away in the depths of winter and the lessons we've learned in the process of letting go. In its place we have an opportunity to create new intentions, goals and collaborations.

Come dance to the rhythms of nature. Sing and dance and embrace the suffering and pain and let it move through you into the courage and strength that lifts your eyes to the sky. The grandmothers and grandfathers invite us to sing... "earth my body, water my blood, air my breath, fire my spirit."

We are all in this dance of life together. Let's not waste the time we've been given waiting on the sidelines for the change that lives inside us and through us.

The theme for this dance is inspired by a poem referenced in many Hollywood films, perhaps most notably in the blockbuster movie “Interstellar.” Written by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas in 1947, it has been suggested that it was written for his dying father.

This ecstatic dance set explores the theme of interstellar and inter-dimensional travel both through the portal of dying, and through the portal of distorted perceptions caused by love, desire, fear, angst, and rage. It will resolve itself into a space where surrender, grief and courage can take root before taking flight.

This is a live recording, I had a mental laps that cut the music out midway for a little blip. Overall the mix is what I'd call interesting. Not my best work, but I am trying some new things so that is to be expected. 

I'm adding a theme after the fact... I am in my Rahu Ketu Dasha and experiencing it to its fullest as it comes to a close the next few months. It feels appropriate on a personal level to label this set as Rahu Ketu because of the intricacies of my Vedic chart, and my desire to pay respect to the Vedic wisdom present in my studies. Beyond that, the relevance feels a little too personal to get into in detail, and of course, it's still revealing itself to me.

Played live on Sunday morning, July 6th, 2025 at the Asheville Movement Collective. This was my first Facilitation and live mix after having stepped away from AMC for almost two years. Leaving wasn't easy, and it really touched my heart to see familiar faces again in this beautiful dance container. 

I've grow in many ways as a person, and as a performing artist and deejay over the time away. This set represents my appreciation for the juxtapositions of simple elements in music to more complex, arranged in an undulating wave structure.

This set has an extra long downtempo opening as I wanted to slowly draw people out of their camping areas to the outdoor dance floor.

One of the things that I love about playing for Asheville Movement Collective's Sunday Dance is the invitation to set an intention or theme to one's dj set. I drew inspiration from the first I'Ching hexagram.

Ch’ien / The Creative

The creative power of dance is available to us now. Let any frantic activity of the mind dissolve into the dance with open receptivity. 

Explore dance, movement, breath, stillness and wonder. Explore your “yes.” Explore your “no.” Explore your light. Explore your shadow. Open your heart. All is forgiven with love and compassion.

Let us gather again, on this sacred dance floor. 

What this mix has to offer is a journey, a time and space to move and be moved. To let old patterns that no longer serve you to pass over and on, with ease and grace. To make more room for the expansion of your gifts and dreams. 

To balance your wild spirit and woke mind.

Invitation: Breakthrough

Before we breakthrough, we must face the breakdown. What is breaking down in your life?

When something breaks down, it provide us with an opportunity to observe, respond, grow and breakthrough to a new way of not just surviving, but thriving in life.

In this dance, you are invited to hold the image of what is breaking down in your life. It could be something external in your world, or a long held belief. Let it express itself in your dance. Give it form, give it life, give it the profound opportunity to move through you. Take this opportunity to face it fully.

By giving the breakdown a means to express itself, the nature of its energy can begin to transform, revealing the underlying root cause and/or belief behind it.

If the dance pushes you to the point of breaking down, you are invited to move to the next step.

Embody love and compassion.

Perhaps this expresses itself through your dance as stillness, or a gentle flow, or deeper breathing patterns. However it expresses, envision love and compassion enveloping you and your dance.

Feel all the feels, and hold yourself and the breakdown you have faced with love and courage.

Remember... breakthrough emerges from the breakdown. We’ll see you on the other side.

This set was played as part of an online dance for the Asheville Movement Collective during a period of quarantine and general unrest surrounding Covid-19. With so many of our lives disrupted, it is a potent time to take notice of what is breaking down. I'm grateful for the feedback I received from my fellow AMC facilitators and friends who continue to educate me on the art of mix making and conscious dance. Breakdown to Breakthrough - Asheville Movement Collective - Friday, April 17, 2020 - 1 wave

You are invited to take a moment to contemplate what it means to embody receptivity. In what ways can you embrace and accept what is happening in your life? What can you feel going on in your body, mind, and emotions? Be receptive to it all, and allow the energy to flow into your dance. Often times it is through surrender and receptivity that a clear path forward is provided.

This set was played for Asheville Movement Collective's Sunday morning dance on May 16th. There's a lot of bird medicine in this set through the lyrics of a couple of songs. I didn't plan it out that way, it just happened. 

And so on the day of the dance, while we danced outside in my yard, of course, feeling our call a hawk circled us as Deya Dova's song "Return of the Bird Tribes" began, and then later during our closing circle as Shaunna was sharing her dance experience she noticed a hawk flying above her outside her house where she was dancing. And as she describes this to us all, my housemates and I saw our hawk return to circle above us! Praise the magic of our winged allies who help to sooth the winds of change that cross our skies. We love you!
