In 1999 and 2000, I was part of the MixMan community (which is, impressively, still around - http://mixman.com/) and also an independent artist on the now defunct MP3.com (or, if not defunct, at least no longer what it once was...).

In those years, I went through several iterations as an, ahem, musical artist. The most hilarious of those was my time spent as P.I.M.P., which naturally stands for "Party In My Pants" {and remember, this was in '99}. My debut album, which sold 7 copies (*that's right ! SEVEN - and only five were to friends and family!*), was called "Are You Coming."

The hilarious part is that I was perpetually single at the time. 

At any rate, you can't find my music online anymore. I've looked. A lot. And that's too bad, because I only got better - until 2001 or so when I stopped for no appreciable reason that I can recall.

This song, Midnight in Bangkok (Thai 2K Mix) was the first release and seventh attempt to use the catchy electro bass line. The vocals are, in a word, stupid, churlish and focused with the cries of a desperate soul. I've grown since then.  What is really unfortunate is that the best remix - the Lo Thai Mix - is completely absent from the Interwebs (and long since gone on my end). Oh well - may this tune provide at least a smirk. It was meant to be danceable, as well as laughable.

Ork is Straight (Apreggo Mix) was probably the most fun I had using my own voice. I cut two samples in at various pitches and tempos (you'll see this again in another song), and pushed it through filters until my ears hurt. 

But the orchestral breaks (orchestrate, get it?!) were never really powerful enough to do the trick, so the song loses momentum. And don't ask what an Apreggo is too - I'm guessing it's my uneducated stab at the word Arpeggio. Failing that, it's a celebration of expectant mothers.

This song, Swimming with Destiny is my hilariously AWFUL attempt at atmospherics, noise, soundscape, etc. The concept was 'what would it be like to swim and float through this dreamy world of whales and dolphins, underwater and care free?' The result falls a little bit short of the mark, but contains several fascinating moments of aural bliss submerged in the otherwise strange fusion of samples. Featuring bottlenose and humpback song clips, a clip Enya played backwards, some scattered piano and synth samples and an ever-present bass line, it really does feel like you are swimming alongside a great, majestic creature...that might eat your ears. I think George and Gracie would have been proud.

Water IS Good. It's totally good. You should have a drink. Hear how lovely the sound of water gently cascading is? Hear how pleasantly quenched those female voices sound? This is the stuff of life! You need water! And, it's conveniently packaged in house format so you can jiggle your booty WHILE staying hydrated. You can also be surprised at the unpredictable nature of the breakdowns and beats. But ultimately, you can relish in the fact that this obscure delight is ... indescribably still available.

By the way, you shouldn't listen to this song if you have to pee.

Soul Knight -Water is Good

Death of the Odyssey (Lovell's Fear) was my first real thematic attempt at composing a song, albeit with bits of sample that I would ultimately have to push through Mixman. It was inspired by the movie Apollo 13, which portrays the near-catastrophic experiences of commander Jim Lovell, Jack Sweigert and Fred Haise. It starts off promising enough, but quickly devolves into a parody of fear thanks in part to some oversampling (is it stuttering?). Still, conceptually it's a bit representative of the movie poster itself, and fades (spoiler alert) with a klaxon and the ahhhhing of angels. I dunno, it works, but as a life raft of a song.

Here's some spooky shit for you - Soul Stealers (Haunted Dub) is a lo-fi spookfest that opens with an improperly sampled and uncredited bit you will undoubtedly recognize as music that plays when the lights are out or low. At the time, this was my second and more serious attempt at atmospherics, though you'll have to remember that finding free sound samples in ready-to-mix format on the net in 1999 when you have a self imposed time limit was not easy. So if I'm going for Vincent Price and end up with Daffy Duck, can you blame me? Well, yes you can, but you probably won't after hearing how spooky-esque I made it sound. My favorite part, though, is the screams and piano bits and the dramatically slowed-down gunshot made into a beat whip. Yeah, this one's not bad, and it shows definite improvement on earlier stuff. Perfect as part of a background tape while handing out candy to little ninjas and elves on All Hallow's Eve. (That's Halloween by the way)

Eye Seek You = ICQ. Hey interwebbers - remember ICQ chat windows? Remember the fun of all those glorious sound cues in the days before smartphones and ringtones? I do. And I want to make sure you do to. This is a Gabber / Progressive House really simple piece that relies on sampling to make it fun. If you have no experience whatsoever with ICQ, you'll be in danger of being thrown off by the incessant samples. If, however, you're familiar with it - you will *LOVE* this mix. "Incoming chat request" and "ribbit" will never leave your ears again...

Soul Knight -Eye Seek You (Beta Test V.2000)

Oh, the anthem that never was. This could have been such an underground hit, if only... I had an appreciable talent, better equipment, and the ability to predict what makes a hit. This song is not that, but is a simple, catchy, quirky and probably offensive tune. The only lyrics are "You Poopie Butt" and "Poopie Butt, Poopie Butt, you are a Poopie Butt". It's kind of sad, really. If you're wondering what the robot is saying, I don't remember - it's a sample played backwards through some filters (shrug) I forgot. But if you're wondering what to insult someone with, if you have deep objections to strong language and don't really want to call them anything they are not (because we do all have fecal matter in our derrieres, do we not?), then this is an apt choice. it's also a catchy tune, and you should be thankful it didn't become an anthem, because dubstep and Call Me Maybe are so much better, amirite?
