After the Israelites left their bondage in Egypt, they wandered 40 years in the wilderness until they came to the River Jordan,  Across the Jordan was Canaan, the Promised Land of Milk and Honey.  The Priests led the way across the Jordan carrying the Ark of the Covenant which was the Dwelling Place of God on earth.
