TriÂngulo’s CD Brinquedo, a recording project based on cultural interaction and exchange, was funded by the Brazilian Government released in June and December, 2001. The object was to produce and artistic work that has reference to the playful and pleasant aspects of life and that transcended barriers of age, background, etc. Thus the name of the project, “Brinquedo,” which means “Toy.” The project also involved the contribution of child percussionists from socially marginalized sectors of urban Belo Horizonte. The children’s contribution was through percussive sounds and rhythms.  Paloma, Albert and Samuel (ages 12, 10 and 9 respectively), have fundamental aspects in common.  They live in the same neighbourhood, they love samba and they have limited socio-economic and cultural mobility.  Regardless of any limitations, all three have promising futures in music.

Brazil is the location – the world gives inspiration.  The music of TriÂngulo reflects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of its member.  Brazilian and Canadian, Marcelo Padre had played and lived in the USA, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Portugal.  A graduate from the jazz school of Concordia in Montreal, Canada, he has played many different styles of music.  He is a composer, arranger and music teacher.  Nestor Lombida Hunt is Cuban. He is a graduate from the Escuela Nacional de Arte de Cuba.  He is a pianist, arranger and orchestral director of the Orquestra do Instituto Cubano of Radio and Television. Guest percussionist hear on the track are Célio de Cavalho (Brazil-Norway), and Santiago Reyther Rivero (Havana, Cuba).  The composition mixes different grooves such as contemporary Cuban songo, jazz bop swing and 'pre-post' SALF rhythmic manipulations and layering.

Mike Ryan - Full Circle

An original Mike Ryan composition and arrangement written for the inauguration of the Rio Art Orquesta which took place at Mike's Brazilian-Australian Cultural Centre in downtown Rio de Janeiro (www.triboz-rio.com).  Apart from Mike on trumpet, the composition also features renowned New York pianist, Cliff Korman (http://cliffkorman.com/).  The voices were recorded by during a fieldwork trip in 1993 to Lavras Novas in the interior of Minas Gerais, Brazil.  The word quilombo originates from Kimbundu, meaning 'village'; mocambo is from Kimbundu or Kikongo, meaning 'hiding place' (Cunha 2001:526, 655). Lavras Novas was certainly a hiding place for escaped black African slaves in Brazil and is believed by many to be a quilombo. The  Rio Art Orquestra's first concert 'SALF Dreaming' took place on September 26 and 27, 2014 with the following musicians and instruments

Original compositions  were based on a non-linear approach incorporating for example, Australian aboriginal dreamtime beliefs, Afro-diaspora, and a 'pre-post' rhythmic manipulations over implicit / explicit pulse - specific rhythmic techniques that form a essential part of the SALF Rhythm Method (see google books, Mike Ryan, SALF: Samba, Brazil World Music).  This Quilombo version that you are hearing was originally a pre-concert rehearsal simulation created by me for distribution to RAO members, using Finale, Logic Pro 10, LA Scoring Strings, Omnisphere, Trillian vst and more. Substitution of virtual parts is underway (e.g., free piano response by Cliff Korman and a Ryan trumpet track response). Dance group collaborations are on the horizon for multi-art live performance.

MIke Ryan - Quilombo

An original Ryan composition for the Rio Art Orquestra and dedicated to my wonderful daughter, Kelly Kimborley Ryan. Structured to allow for individual soloistic improvisations when introducing the Orquestra musicians towards the end of a concert presentation.  As in other RAO compositions, pre-post rhythmic phrasing in individual and ensemble parts, over implicit  and explicit pulse groove is a SALF technique featured.
