For our 240th Truancy Volume, we have the great honour of hosting Bristol-based luminary Batu in the mix. Emerging as one of our favourite producers, DJs and curators in dance music over the last few years, Omar McCutcheon released the first compilation from his brilliant label Timedance in 2018: Patina Echoes highlighted some of the label’s regulars as well as new talent, also featuring individual releases by Laksa, Lurka and Ploy. After a packed few months for Batu himself with releases on other labels including R&S and XL Recordings, this week marks a return to his own imprint with his new EP, False Reeds. False Reeds consists of three percussion-driven cuts for the club, born out of vocal samples re-synthesized into new sounds as source. While it unmistakably sounds like Batu, with a thread of absorbing polyrhythms and a healthy injection of bass-weight, the EP is deliberately more in line with the warmer end of the spectrum rather than techno this time around.

This is Treezy B's African Art of Acid (Triple A baybee) Mixx, an homage to the art form that is known as acid house. As we all know House was birthed from Chicago, coming from the same gestation of 80s post disco black music that gave us Techno & Hip Hop. This period of musical innovation, propelled primarily by black youth, was yet another part in the long history of African-Americans dictating popular culture. Acid house was another rhythmic mistake, like the original blue note; an innovative use of technology beyond it's original intent by putting sum stank on it. 

It was black people who used a discarded bass machine to produce futuristic & psychedelic sounds that would influence the world yet again. Yet acid house, like most forms of popular music, did not do for the black community what it's done for others. Acid muzik has been lazily copied and mass produced, with little of the soul intact. There was no Second Summer of Love in Amerikkka, no Ibiza for Negroes to spend their holiday, no beginnings of a multi-million dollar industry that could change the lives of Lady Liberty's bastard children. The Summer of 1988 for those of African blood was another year of ravaging due to Reaganomics, Thatcherism, crack cocaine, gang violence, and institutional racism on a global scale.

Still melanin keeps on providing because funk is it's own reward. And if it ain't funky then what the funk are you doin?

All songs are acid music produced by people of African Diasporac descent. All vinyl records on 1 Technics SL-1200M3D, 1 Technics SL-1200MK5 & an Ecler NUO 2.0 mixer.

"Unlike the other daytime curators, Lena Willikens chose to open La Sucrière's impressive main hall on Friday, playing alongside her usual back-to-back partner Vladimir Ivkovic. The two looked relaxed behind the decks, swaying, smoking and sometimes smiling. The crowd, less dense than during the other headliners due to the early start, were also in a good mood, using the extra space to feel out each beat of the slower selections. Much of the two hours felt like existing in the lagging moment of a sci-fi movie, just before a spaceship launches into warp speed (in a good way, I promise)."

The Chicago-based dj, producer, playwright, and writer is a creative force, never shying from her power to amplify the voices of women through her art and music. Ariel's a meticulous curator, vivid storyteller, and passionate dj, which is exemplified through the various parties she's organized, the numerous tracks and records she's produced, and her impressive number of residencies (Chicago's Smartbar just to name one). A major strength of Ariel's artistry is the duality of her sound, which is present in both her dj sets and productions, and represents her multifaceted talent and background. "this is a mix made up of tracks from my favourite producers and for this reason i really wanted to let the tracks breathe. It's a live mix done during late night studio session, it's not over-polished and that's how I like it. Most of the tracks are by afro artists or those influenced by afro drums and rhythm patterns. It has a metallic industrial feel in places and but is warm and colourful too. Stylistically I'm drawn to loose, rough and raw percussion, layered polyrhythms, just witchy black energy. keeping it deep with 100bpm rollers freaking you out with acid she is
a devilishly dexterous DJ. Because of this she has become an NTS
regular, firm favourite at places like De School and Dimensions and
counts Timedance boss Batu and the Livity Sound crew as fans.

In the mix for us she serves up all sorts of futurist beats that are
wired up with electronics or stripped back to more haunting and
hypnotic sound worlds. Reni's ability to manipulate rhythm and
texture, time and space is utterly thrilling and finds her go from
slowed down dub to high octane minimalism and on to jungle with ease
over the course of this slick 90 minute selection.
