When we released Thor's “Yellow Sky Over Reykjavík” on the first part of our “Icelandic Lost Tracks” series in 2010, we were proud beyond words to discover such an outstanding and still unreleased track from one of our heroes from the 90ies. 

We called the original a dancefloor-resetter, an expression which was also used more than onceby reviewers and press-people when writing about the release. 

When we decided to do the Iconography series with its wonderful artwork, split in four parts and illustrated by Julia Humpfer, we knew we had to use this bomb for it, but also that we have to choose the remixers wisely. 

After making the right choice with Tuff City Kids and Lake People as remixers for Chymera's classic “Caprica Burning”, the first part of our Iconography Series, we apparently also had the right instinct with Prins Thomas and Baikal for Thor's “Yellow Sky Over Reykjavík”. Both interpreted the tune in a very personal way, but with full respect for the original parts. Two directions, two anthems. Nuff said!

For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

2013 should be a vintage year for Timo Maas. Over the next 12 months, he’ll release this, his long awaited new artist album, Lifer, featuring Mikill Pane, Placebo’s Brian Molko, U.N.K.L.E’s James Lavelle, Katie Cruel and more; he’ll celebrate 10 years as a resident at DC10 in Ibiza; welcome new artists to his Rockets & Ponies imprint, and continue to reinforce his reputation as one of German electronic music’s most colourful characters.

Prior to this, however, Timo will satisfy his first love – the dancefloor – with ‘Pop A Bubble’, his own original contribution to Cocoon’s 100th release compilation, and remixes for James Teej on Sasha’s Last Night On Earth label and Johnny Mikes on Lower East Records; reworkings that add to a remix pedigree that includes Madonna, Depeche Mode, Muse, Fatboy Slim and beyond.

For those that have followed the trajectory of Maas’ previous 2 artist albums (Loud and Pictures), Lifer contains yet more wildly divergent collaborators, from Brighton chanteuse Katie Cruel (formerly of We Fell To Earth and now signed to Rockets & Ponies), who weighs in with the haunting ‘Articulation’, the gritty rap delivered by rising one-to-watch, Mikill Pane on ‘Grown-Up’, through to Placebo singer Brian Molko’s contribution to ‘College 84’, while James Lavelle delivers a primo vocal on the dramatic ‘The Hunted’ (the only vocal he’s done outside of U.N.K.L.E). The dusky feeling is still there, but with an ultraviolet sheen and those quirky flourishes that have become trademarks of both Mr. Wruhme and the Pampa label.
