Davy and Peter Rothbart

A little over an hour north-west of Louisville, Kentucky, is a town called Medora, Indiana. Population less than one-thousand. And little Medora High School, with about 35 male students, fields the worst basketball team in the league. The Medora Hornets. As of the start of the 2010 season, they were in the middle of a years-long losing streak. Filmmakers Davy Rothbart ("FOUND" magazine) and Andrew Cohn moved to Medora and filmed the season. In this interview, Rothbart speaks with WFPL's Erin Keane about basketball, rural Indiana, and the incredible young men at the heart of the film.

My Heart Is An Idiot

The Utah Arts Festival is now underway, so #CreativeUtah No. 5 is the final challenge in our creativity series. We've partnered with the Festival to inspire you to see the art around you. This week, we're asking you to find "Unintentional Art." We were inspired by Davy Rothbart, creator of Found Magazine. The idea of the magazine is simple, they collect and publish stuff that readers have found and sent into them - notes, photos, cards, whatever. Rothbart says it's a way to connect to people we share the world with. RadioWest producer Elaine Clark spoke with him.

Saving love letters in the digital age can be tricky. Iris Lee, a metadata analyst at the American Museum of Natural History, came up with a clever solution for saving the text messages between her and her partner off her old cell phone. Dr. Michelle Janning, professor of sociology, and Davy Rothbart, founder and editor of FOUND Magazine, weigh in with their thoughts about how and why people save love messages.

One night Davy Rothbart found a note on his car. It was a very personal note. Except it wasn't for him. The writer had mistaken Davy's car for her boyfriend's car. And it was that note that got Davy started on Found Magazine and the website foundmagazine.com. It's a collection of notes, scraps and photos found by people all over the world, items that are sometimes inexplicable and usually funny, perplexing and raw. They are always very personal in that they reveal something about the soul of the writer.

Now after ten years of publishing other people's innermost feelings, Davy has turned the lens on himself with his new book of personal essays, My Heart is an Idiot. He's on a 79-city tour to promote the book and to celebrate Found Magazine's tenth anniversary. He's been traveling with his brother Peter, a musician who writes songs based on found notes. Peter's new CD is You Are What You Dream.

Before their show at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, Davy sat down with CHIRP Radio's Dan Epstein. Davy popped open his briefcase, shuffled through the hundreds of scraps of paper inside and chose a few of his favorite found notes to share.
