The first of a series of improvised vinyl-only mixes recorded at home during the sixth lockdown here in Melbourne, Australia.

I don't really record mixes at home these days but maybe I should? The urge to share music is always there so I thought I would channel some of that energy into an improvised vinyl-only mix at home. Nothing genre-specific, just feel-good vibes, I wanted to bring together records of all styles & eras to help tell you a story. I hope the music takes you to a good place. Have a nice day x

Live At Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, March 7th 2015 supporting Soil & Pimp Sessions (Japan)

On March 22nd 2016, I performed a DJ set at the Prince Bandroom in Melbourne before Kamasi Washington and his incredible band took the stage in Melbourne for their first headline show. Rarely do I ever get the chance to share an entire set of records like these that I love so much. I hope you enjoy my set.

Here are the 3 sets I played at the Meredith Music Festival in December, 2016. It was amazing fun playing the interstitial DJ sets on the Saturday night at the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre.

The festival has been running since 1991 and was recognised as 'Best Festival' at The Age Music Victoria Awards in 2016. It was incredibly humbling to be included on the bill.

It was my first time performing in front of that many people and I was so excited to share my selections to the sold out crowd of 13,000 in complete party mode!

Unfortunately we did have some technical issues on one of the decks, so a few tracks appear in mono. Thankfully the crew were able to fix it, so it eventually works out.

I hope you enjoy the music as much as I enjoyed playing it. If you happened to be there, I hope this serves as a nice memory of a great night.

Mike Gurrieri Interstitial DJ Sets @ Meredith Music Festival 2016

This is the live recording from my set at Piknic Electronik in Melbourne on January 22nd, 2017. It was great to perform at such a great event in my hometown. 

Fellow local DJ Pjenne played a great set before me of disco, balearic house & afro tunes,  so it was nice to come on following those vibes. My set was from 3.30pm till just after 5 when Harvey Sutherland & Bermuda took the stage and tore it up!

I wanted to play a mixture of stuff showing the roots of house via disco & jazz-funk and it was amazing to get such a great reaction from the up-for-it crowd.

Big thanks to Stable Music, Hardware & everyone involved at Piknic Electronik for having me down!

Equinox Recordings Mix for Stolen Moments (Triple R)

Debut production offering from Melbourne based DJ & radio broadcaster Mike Gurrieri, a remix of Australian jazz legend Barney McAll's version of Leon Thomas' 'Precious Energy'.

In late 2019, Barney McAll released an album called 'An Extra Celestial Christmas'. On it includes a track 'Precious Energy' a cover of a Leon Thomas tune featuring the wonderful vocals of Rita Satch.

It is a tune that Barney loved playing during his many years touring as Gary Bartz's pianist so he decided to make a recording of it and make it a homage to two of his heroes, Leon Thomas & Pharaoh Sanders.

From the time of it's release up until the Covid-19 lockdown, Mike was constantly playing it out on both radio & in DJ sets, but wanted to hear it given an extra club-friendly treatment.

After building up the courage to ask Barney for the track stems, he sent them over without hesitation, his only instruction was to "be free". With his blessings, Mike set out to create the remix.

Albert Ayler once said 'music is the healing force of the universe', hopefully this music brings you some positive energy right now at a time when we all really need it.

This music was recorded & produced on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation whose sovereignty was never ceded.

The track was premiered on Tuesday, June 9th on Worldwide FM by Gilles Peterson.
