Description: Notes heard in the aftermath. The struggle to breathe, and the memories that followed, of carefree crowds, temporarily innocent. A slowed lament and funereal dirge.

These insect substrate-borne vibrations were recorded with laser doppler vibrometers from local plants in a wet meadow located in Gais, Switzerland. Laser vibrometers are able to detect the vibrational signals emitted by insects that travel through the surface of the plants in the meadow. Only two local insects could be identified by the signals they produced, and those were Aphropora major (a froghopper) and Sorhoanus assimilis (a leafhopper). Over 20 different insect signals were documented during the field study. Although their identity can not be revealed yet, we hypothesise that many of these signals belong to the Auchenorryncha suborder of insects, specialised in vibrational communication. The signals, emanating from the vibrational interactions within the local vibroscape, were extracted from 150 hours of recorded material collected over the course of August 8, 9, and 10, 2023. The research of vibroscapes in nature is rather recent and this was the first time that an alpine meadow was recorded.

À l’heure des Jeux Olympiques de Paris 2024, Stephane Marin et la Cie Espaces Sonores se mettent à l’écoute des différentes disciplines olympiques et paralympiques. 

En s’accordant aux timbres et aux énergies propres des différents sons des sports, et des athlètes qui les produisent dans l’effort, plusieurs propositions sonores se déclinent ici selon différents dispositifs qui porteront les sons toujours plus vite, toujours plus haut, toujours plus fort et, bien entendu, afin d’écouter plus que jamais : ensemble !

La Forêt OLYMPhonIQUE est une installation sonore multicanale composée à partir de sons des sports (sons du matériel, des corps, éclats de voix, respirations, acoustiques des lieux...) met en jeu et en espace les différentes dynamiques des disciplines olympiques au sein d’une dramaturgie sonore subtile empreinte de tensions et de détentes palpables, à travers des suspensions et des climax audibles.

everyday (03-06-24) sparkle sand

Cold nights and warmer sunny days causes stress on thick lake ice. As the ice freezes and melts on a daily basis, periodic cracking and pinging sounds can be heard, sometimes quite dramatically. This track is edited from an all night recording made at a lake in south Estonia, a "greatest cracks" if you will, from more than 6 hours of material.

In a lightless aqueduct passing below the city. A semi-binaural rig and a pair of Geofons recording in parallel. The recording has not been edited, and the sounds have not been modified in any way. No EQ, no effects.

2024.03.02 Underground Listening Meditation (Excerpt). Summer.

My favorite recording location did not disappoint this evening in early march. I have heard about cod drumming, and suspect that this is it. However I wasn't prepared for this intense sound of several individual species making noise at the same time. 

There are some anthropophony in this recording. Mainly noise from small vessels, but some faint sounds from cars passing over a bridge 600 meters to the east.

Readings in solidarity on Palestine, around the rock from Bethlehem, in Coventry Cathedral.

Overview:
A geologic, sociological and poetic collaboration of solidarity  from the 100 million years old rock, sitting in the modernist Coventry Cathedral, gifted in 1960 from Bethlehem. The stone becomes a touchstone to Gaza today, as we collectively read and say words from and connected to the never ending destruction, starvation and desecration of Palestinians under settler colonialism.

“Whenever I go, I can't help but notice signs of a looming change. I eavesdrop on conversations of creatures big and small, and like me, they seem uneasy and uncertain about what's to come. Something is in the air, dark clouds gather, winds are shifting course. Amidst the confusion and restlessness, the voices of non-human and human worlds blend in a worrisome symphony. This piece is an ode to anticipation, to the beauty of different forms of life on the brink of the sixth mass extinction. Joining in the chorus are the American toad, northern winds, an old kettle, Mr. Cat, tawny owl, crickets, domestic chickens and pigs, trumpeter swans, honey bees, truck horns, cormorants, seagulls and other elements and critters.” — Alëna Korolëva 

Something is afoot, the Tkaronto/Toronto-based artist and curator, Alëna Korolëva tells us in her new soundscape composition “premonitions”. American toads and water beetles set things in motion before the long-form piece journeys through a multitude of field recordings and non-human voices in a quasi-cinematographic fashion. Korolëva layers and manipulates sounds from the real into a sonic chimaera which mutates concrete ambiances into vaporous surrealities through the modes of collage. A storm blankets the soundscape, things grow quieter. Distant parallels with Luc Ferrari’s "musique anecdotique" come to mind, yet here the piece materializes in an acoustic docu-fiction of some sort, that takes the form of a waking dream. Various scenes, ranging from the mundane to the uncanny, unfold in eardrums exposing an underlying sense of earthly melancholy. A weight lurks throughout while winds, pigs, chickens, and mechanical apparatus weave into a strange agitated tapestry. A kettle whistles, a cat meows – Korolëva sprinkles the gloom with touches of humor and audible senses of home. Trumpeter swans are joined by a trumpeter human; Chayka Chekhov responds to the avian songs in a interspecies dialogue – echoing Jim Nollman’s “Playing Music With Animals”. Environments cascade into a finale droned out by truck horns. Their ringings and animal cries swell in a somber abstraction bearing the weight of a presentiment. “What does the future hold?” we ask ourselves throughout the album as we dissolve in imbrications of positionings, emanating from one another like stacking dolls. Poly-layered, “premonitions” engages in play, in negotiation with the disparate spaces and voices of a troubled world as if it created harmonious discord to decipher the ominous clouds gathering in the horizon.
