Pre-Globes Gambling Preview w/ David Long! - ORC 12/19/23

"Maestro" had its world premiere at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion. It is the second film to be directed by Academy Award-nominee Bradley Cooper following "A Star Is Born" and features him and Academy Award-nominee Carey Mulligan transforming into Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. The two were kind enough to spend a little bit of time talking with me about their work on the film, and I also got the chance to speak with the film's Costume Designer, Academy Award-winner Mark Bridges. Dan Bayer also interviewed Academy Award-winning Supervising Sound Editor Richard King. All three interviews can be listened to below. A Behind The Scenes Look At "Maestro"

"Flamin' Hot" premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, where it received positive reviews and was later released on Hulu and Disney+ over the summer. Academy Award-winner Diane Warren has been nominated at the Oscars 14 times in competitive categories. This year, she's shortlisted for writing the song for the film titled "The Fire Inside," performed by Becky G. Nominated already by the Society of Composers and Lyricists and Hollywood Music in Media, she could very well earn her 15th competitive nomination this year for the song which has over 2 million views on YouTube. Warren was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the song, which you can listen to below. "The Teachers' Lounge" premiered at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, receiving critical acclaim for its direction, writing, and lead performance from Leonie Benesch. It went on to play many other film festivals throughout the year, ultimately receiving Germany's selection for Best International Feature Film at this year's Academy Awards. Director and co-writer İlker Çatak was kind enough to speak with us following the film's Oscar nomination for Best International Feature Film to discuss his experience making the film, what went into the film's screenplay, how the film's tension was influenced by "Uncut Gems" and more. Interview With "It's What's Inside" Director/Writer Greg Jardin

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Nadia Dalimonte, Josh Parham & Daniel Howat to review and discuss the latest film in the "Wallace & Gromit" franchise: "Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl" starring Ben Whitehead, Peter Kay, Lauren Patel & Reece Shearsmith. The Bond Character Study is in fact next. But we needed to get a whole lot of business done first in this MMO Weekly. You get some high praise for new movies in What We’re Watching & then some serious analysis in the News Of The Week before some of the more familiar segments of Do You Care, a Box Office Update, Trailer Thoughts, and Audience Interaction.

Now both Mike & I are big fans of the horror genre. So it was a treat to review The Invisible Man and The Lodge atop the episode. We’ll also review a neon purple Nic Cage in Color Out Of Space and later in the show, that new Candyman trailer from Jordan Peele & Nia DaCosta. After our introduction, there's no way to transition. But we do believe a show must go on here. It's our role. It's our job. As film journalists, as entertainers, as podcasters trying to offer talk radio for movie fans, we do believe that if our show can offer some respite, then we want to put it out there. 

Therefore, we do head into a second segment. So it’s here that we begin with a story about Netflix, as they did not submit any of their upcoming films to the fall film festivals, and we speculate about why they might be making such a complete reversal from previous years. Does it have anything to do with their recent purchase of Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater? Does Netflix think Oscars 2021 will postpone? Or is this some combination of strategy & logistics?

In What We’re Watching, we continue to review a bunch of stuff from Netflix like Spaceforce, Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, Unbelievable, Community, and The Wrong Missy. But we also discuss Defending Jacob, Fosse/Verdon, and ESPN’s Lance.

During a box office update, we dissect the latest news about Tenet’s release date. Does the closure of the San Francisco market prohibit the Christopher Nolan film from opening on time? Can bigger cities like LA & NY hope to reopen if Frisco can’t? Or is WB dependent on non-traditional markets to make up the slack?

Finally, we end with a fun rundown of some of your responses to our Twitter Questions. What did you consider Must Watch TV for movie lovers? What films have you been shocked to love? MMO Weekly is our weekly news & variety show designed to cover the news of Hollywood, and it’s usually a fast paced, fun time in terms of preparation, recording, & we hope, listening. But when we have serious news to cover, it’s unfortunately a much more serious show. So there is a trigger warning in effect for the first segment here as we cover the horrible stories around the allegations of sexual misconduct against Chris D’Elia, those of sexual assault against Ansel Elgort, and the charges of rape against Danny Masterson. How has Hollywood reacted? How should they treat these accused individuals moving forward? & how should we cover it? We’re always looking for ways to grow & educate ourselves. So as always, do please speak your truths to us.

In a Box Office Update, we discuss two major stories as well. First of all, why the hell was Gone With The Wind atop recent VOD sales charts? & how should we discuss the historical context of “classic” films? Then we break down the stories regarding how major movie theater chains plan to reopen in July.

The last two segments play much more like typical MMOW ones as we dive into a What We’re Watching segment that reviews everything from The Dead Zone to Clemency to BBC’s Luther to Dan Harmon movies.
