there's been a lot of talk of armageddon coming with the way things are I'm not ashamed to count the days

MASS SHOOTINGS IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IN THE UNITED STATES
There have been 385 mass shootings in the United States in 2024, including at Apalachee High School, following a near-record number of mass shootings in 2023. No other high-income country has suffered such a high death toll from gun violence. Every day, more than 120 Americans die at the end of a gun, including suicides and homicides, an average of 44,341 per year. According to the latest available analysis of data from 2015 to 2019, the US gun homicide rate was 26 times that of other high-income countries; its gun suicide rate was nearly 12 times higher. Mass shootings, defined as attacks in which at least four people are injured or killed excluding the shooter, have been on the rise since 2015, peaking at 686 incidents in 2021.
I cannot imagine what it must be like to lose someone suddenly from a random act of violence. I wrote this song from the perspective of someone who is grieving such a loss. Having a moment of peace only to be interrupted again by the grief which turns to anger and then some resolve at the end. Unfortunately I just heard about another shooting by another scumbag stranger. God bless the victims and their families. I wish the inspiration for this song never occurred, but it has.

Mike: Dave sent me this 3/3 chord progression that he came up with on acoustic guitar. I had it in my playlist for about a year. One day while sitting in my car waiting for my daughter to come out of Lacrosse practice it came on and I started singing "Calling but I'm getting nothing from you". I went home and played it on the piano. Had to add the D G C part at the end of the chorus to fit the vocal melody. And if you want to really get musician nerdy I had to go to the F# a measure early for "I've been alone for so long" for it to land on "long". I didn't want it to stay slow throughout the entire song so I added the 4/4 part after the first chorus "wasn't thunder was a bomb...." and that brought me back to the verse but more up tempo and still 4/4. I had to cut that off to get back to 3/3 chorus so I created "screaming but nobody's home" which allowed me to stop making it easy to pick up with the 3/3 chorus

I wrote this song in late July 2025 while preparing for my oldest daughter's departure to college. 
Get comfortable pull up a chair I got a feeling that we're gonna be stuck down here for a long time
So much has happened all throughout our years the days passed like lightening through the atmosphere as it flies by, rock a bye bye
Searching to find looking for you across the hay field down to the bungalow blue
She said it looked like someone else's tattoo because it's been there forever and time will never catch up to you
So keep on running just as fast  as you can
Chase after something that might never happen
The drive is more fun than the destination

The dust has settled and the smoke has cleared we're still down here staring at a rope and stairs that we won't climb, and I don't mind 'cause I'll always be loving you
