For this week we wanted to stir things up a bit by stepping out of our comfort zone. We love Techno, but most important we love music! Our guest for this week is Mikke Metal, a Copenhagen based musician known for numerous releases on Echocord and Kompakt. Both respectable labels in the electronic music scene. 

According to Mikkel, his approach for this mix was to go for tracks that are patient, eclectic, deep, cool and atmospheric rather than dancy stuff. So the result is a quite diverse selection of tracks.

“I started out, half by laziness, not wanting to beatmix, and then decided to make it principle not to beatmix and respect the original tempo of the tracks. Instead I allowed myself to work with effects etc, in order to focus on tonal instead of rhythmical transitions”

Joining us next month, playing in the Mood Hut hosted Room Three on Friday 6th March, alongside Hashman Deejay, Pender Street Steppers and BAKE, we've followed Brian Not Brian's mixes from a casual distance for a while now. So when he kindly offered to put together something a little bit different for us ahead of the event, we wondered out loud what we'd actually get back. Thankfully the promo mix he just dropped us is full of the kind of weird and wonderful stretches we'd actually hoped for. Yep, there's plenty of space bound psych jams and a few patches of distortion but it's Brian's love of lo-fi drum machine hustles that start off kind of timid but become hypnotic that really wins out.

The Californian drone veteran constructs a spine-tingler from the archives.

For the second time this year, we’re being spoilt with a FACT mix of nothing but original and unreleased music. Woven from the same guitars, tape, modular synths and vintage drum machines that produced his stunning new album on Mexican Summer, A Year With 13 Moons, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma’s session is a neat companion to Torn Hawk’s sprawling, soft-focus mix from January and one that we're sure we'll be coming back to all year long.

The former Tarantel member has dipped into his vast archives to pick out an album’s worth of improvised tracks made between 2012 and 2014, mixing them down to two-track tape while “adding a few FX here and there”. Throbbing synths are smothered in static, guitars are buried in mossy noise and crushed LinnDrum loops heave against each other like tectonic plates, occasionally crumbling away completely – but throughout you can hear traces of the mournful shoegaze and ‘80s pop that bubble under the surface of the new record (an unexpected direction for which we can thank the encouragement of noise guru Pete Swanson, as FACT’s Maya Kalev learned in her recent interview).

“It’s pretty fucked,” he says – and with that as your warning and encouragement, dive in.

There's no tracklist, it's just a collection of patches, sounds and effects that played well together, performed and tweaked live, which is how I like to play ambient and drone sets: with no particular tracks or sections in mind, just a constant flow of sound.

Some sounds used for the first half of the set come from my collection of Buddha Machines: I like to physically place two or three them in front of some source of background noise (the ocean, air conditioner units, dripping taps, distant factories, traffic...) and record a couple of minutes of what unfolds. Then I load the results into a sampler and play with it, which creates all sorts of interesting harmonies, rhythms and textures. There's also water drops hitting the top of a coffeemaker and the wind shaking a bunch of reeds in there, see if you can spot them
