"I’ve always been sensitive to my surroundings and the world is in a very vulnerable place at the moment. I felt I needed to express my true emotions through something a little bit different to a conventional DJ mix and also that just writing one song was not going to be enough.

It was almost like composing a score, the only difference being that the pictures were only in my head. My ambition was for the music to evoke a visual response in the listener rather than just an emotional one. To do that I took some audio snippets of real life current affairs scenarios that really struck a chord in me and then used my DJ instinct to think of a track/musical piece that would fit well to that particular scene. Sometimes when I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted I added my own music over existing music or did my own sound design to create my own sound effects and also wrote some original pieces in the moment. It was very important to me to create ultimate flow and I felt this could only have been achieved without having any beats supporting the music. I also didn't want to make it eclectic nor constant as I felt that would disrupt the listener’s focus emotionally. There is a strong dynamic range throughout similar to classical music and also some parts that are almost meditative and then in contrast some more intense moments.

Montreal-based Frenchman Olivier Alary is a highly talented composer, who has previously collaborated with Bjork. Having released albums on FatCat and Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label under the lushly-orchestrated, experimental pop guise of Ensemble, over the past five or six years Olivier has moved away from that song-based project to focus on composing material for a stream of films and artistic collaborations. In June 2016 Olivier signed to 130701, and this album – a compilation of film soundtrack work - marks his debut under his own name.

Chapitre I : Quitter la Terre

a) Un Dernier Regard sur Kourou
Journal de bord, jour 1, 12h30 
Je m'appelle Étienne Duval. Je suis le commandant de l'expédition Arpenteur, composée d'Ellis Novemberg, pilote allemand et ami de longue date, Claire Icranos, opératrice des communications, Ito Atanaka, navigateur, Francis Delacarne, notre spécialiste mécanicien et Abou N'dake qui est chargé du rationnement. Le but de cette mission est d'envoyer des êtres humains aux confins du système solaire. Le décollage du vaisseau l'Héritage est prévu pour 14h30, heure locale. 
Selon les astrophysiciens du CSG, ce serait le créneau optimal pour atteindre l'orbite lunaire en six heures environ. Je me suis permis de sortir de la station, prendre l'air et apprécier le paysage des plages de Kourou. Il me faut mémoriser chaque élément du décor, il est possible que je ne puisse plus jamais les revoir. 

b) CSG
Journal de bord, jour 1, 13h15
Le Centre Spatial Guyanais m'évoque une immense dédale de fils, câbles, écrans et autres claviers de contrôle, fusionnés à cet interminable circuit informatique qui se déroule le long des murs. Tout le monde s'active pour que les coordonnées de navigation soient parfaites. Le reste de l'équipage n'est pas encore présent. L'impatience se fait sentir, elle transpire sur les murs. 

c) Préparer l'Héritage
Journal de bord, jour 1, 13h40
L'Héritage ressemble à un énorme monstre. Impossible d'y reconnaître les formes d'une fusée tant sa coque est enfouie sous des couches d'éléments externes détachables. Abou s'énerve contre des agents du CSG. Il essaye de leur faire comprendre que les sections greffées à la navette contenant les réserves de nourriture ne sont pas sensées être détachables. Des dizaines de mains s'activent à faire ronronner l'Héritage, qui produit le son d'un énorme bœuf mécanique au repos. Je ne sais pas si je dois être excité de partir ou apeuré de me jeter dans le vide intersidéral. 

d) Décollage
Journal de bord, jour 1, 14h30
Nous voilà tous réunis dans le cockpit, cet équipage d'inconnus, ces représentants de la race humaine qui ont la lourde tâche d'aller au bout du système solaire, voire au-delà. 
L'Héritage possède une poussée hors du commun. Le simple allumage des moteurs stationnaires nous colle déjà à nos sièges. Je m'y ferais jamais d'être bloqué à l'horizontal comme ça. Espérons que le moteur EM-Drive ne fasse pas des siennes, j'ai demandé à Ellis d'enclencher le processus et à Claire de transmettre à Kourou notre départ de l'orbite terrestre, qui devrait être imminent. Ito nous fait signe que les coordonnées d'arrivée sont calibrées. 
Nous nous regardons avec une vieille complicité, et nous allumons la propulsion atomique avec Ellis. La mission Arpenteur est officiellement lancée. 
Que le Cosmos nous garde.
