So China was cool I guess... There's this notion that if one wants to find spiritual things rather than material things one should travel east. It's in Asia where we see the Chinese and Indians worship archaic concepts and bow down to metaphorical abstractions that are directed to the one's inner self.
Yet in China I experienced none of it. Granted, I had a spiritual revival of my own but not like the typical Westerner going to this ancient world. Instead, I found myself in a world trying to be something it couldn't be because it was still holding onto the things that were killing itself; it was trying to be free.
My reason for going to China was to work as a translator for my cousin's business travel agency in Peru. I was to translate Spanish and English breaking the barrier God intended in the Tower of Babel. But as I looked up the Canton Tower, the largest building in Guangzhou, I realized that China was so desperately trying to be Western. (Isn't the official name of the country "The People's Republic of China"?) But because of the ideology, it couldn't no matter how much it tried.
What an experience The 123rd Canton Fair was. I never felt so saturated in capitalism in my life, yet at the same time, I felt very empty. If there was anything that I learned in Freedom's with Dr. Mitchell it was that you can't separate Christianity from freedom, for in the Christian faith we find freedom in someone who is eternal and not idols that wear down over time. The Canton Fair was beautiful, full of many gadgets and products; but that's all it was- stuff on top of stuff. And although I closed 3 deals with my clients, I still did not feel as if I'd accomplished anything.
It was only whenever I spoke to someone during my stay there and more specifically during my days in several airports from China and back home, where I felt 'something'. And I realized "it's there!" For not in one single conversation did I neglect to mention my God. Somehow I was able to put Him as a focal point in the conversations. And through those dialogues, I made friends from across the globe. But it was Christ that they will remember out of a Peruvian American in a foreign world.
