Hey Convict! is a duo originating from Melbourne, Australia and over many years they've championed a sound that we happily cannot describe. Tamas Jones now resides in Sydney and Jason Evans in New York City, but their telepathic vibe is stronger than any hemisphere can break. Enjoy this mix they call Gone Troppo—an oldie but a goody finding its final resting place in our Listening Sessions series.

[MIX] ESP Institute - Listening Sessions II — Hey Convict!

You can hear, in the songs of No Regular Play, hints at the sounds that inspired the duo to make music in the first place, and sonic whispers of the vast musical lexicon they share. Friends since the age of eight, Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn grew up listening to Native Tongues and underground hip-hop and jazz. That love of music never waned: the two traveled to Cuba together to study Afro-Cuban music and Paulus formally studied classical and jazz and toured with the band Beirut. That explains, then, why their output since they began releasing music in 2008 – mostly as part of the Wolf+Lamb collective – has so effectively married diverse sonic influences with smooth house. Nothing Less, their debut release on the HAKT label, very nearly glides through its four songs, bringing along elements and instruments give this release depth, richness and texture. 

On “Nothing Less,” the opener, Paulus plays trumpet against a backbeat that’s suddenly surrounded by cosmic synths and his own Prince-reminiscent vocals. Track two, “Night Ranger,” feels like an ‘80s summer night, with keys forming elegant patterns beneath Paulus’s vocals and sparse, mournful horns. “Ice Cold Bottle” toys with synthy funk, and fills out with murky keys, thumping beats and lyrics that are smirkily, playfully sleazy (And includes maybe the best lyric of late: “Don't bother with the bathing suit/’Cause that suit will drop.”) And “Indigo,” which starts off with stacks of handclaps and big bottomed bass, unexpectedly weaves in swooning cello and string swells that feel hopelessly romantic.

Introducing the to be eclectic moniker behind Chris Malinchak's late night studio sorties, The Establishment. Crafting music at all hours of the day, there is often the instance where Chris sharpens his craft and refreshes his palate by creating music outside of his normal parameters. This natural shifting allows him to return to the next track afresh. Being that this particular output is very personal, it is unnatural for him to share such creations. But like the sneaky, talented horsemen that we are, we've been able to extract a couple. Starting with Love Like This.

When something is too good to not be shared, it will be shared anyway!

The Establishment - Love Like This

1985 was a memorable year for Rick James; that year, he recorded Glow (one of his more adventurous albums of the 1980s), produced and wrote the Mary Jane Girls' All Four You, and did some work with former Brides of Funkenstein member Val Young (who Motown signed on James' recommendation). James' influence is strong on Young's first solo album, Seduction -- he wrote and produced two of the songs ("Piece of My Heart" and the intoxicating title track), while the rest of the LP was produced by Fred Jenkins and Stone City Band keyboardist Levi Ruffin Jr. Some of the Mary Jane Girls contribute background vocals, and Young's accompaniment includes members of James' Stone City Band. But Young is certainly her own person -- in fact, she wrote or co-wrote the lyrics for six of the nine songs. Though parts of Seduction are very James-influenced, "Let's Fall in Love" and "Tellin' Me Lies" are closer to the type of material that Kashif would have produced for Evelyn "Champagne" King in the 1980s. And while Young is an R&B singer first and foremost, she incorporates pop/rock elements with pleasing results on "Mind Games" and the playful, slightly new wave-ish "Come Hang Out." This good to excellent album did moderately well, but not as well as it should have -- and regrettably, Young never made it to the next level commercially. ~ Alex Henderson

Ghosts (Patrick Schulze Remix)

A.1 ‘All in Line’ is a slomo-disco-funk track, reminiscent of early works of Henrik Schwarz, with a groove from his experience being in a gospel choir. This track gets a remix treat by Ken Sumitani aka STEREOCiTI who is known for his EPs and album “Kawasaki” released in 2011 on German label Mojuba. The remix is a deep house track for the floor with atmospheric synthesizers and percussions using the original vocal phrase. On side B, ‘I See It’ is a modern electric funk with his own vocals, sophisticated electric piano and funky bass lines that would warm up the dark floor. This one gets a Chicago-ish new school house style remix by Belgium producer San Soda, known for his stunning releases on WE PLAY HOUSE and FCL ‘It’s You (San Soda’s Panorama Bar Acca Version)’ licensed to Defected.
