In May 2020 just before the height of the Covid-19 global pandemic, I went to Asia on tour with my band PillowTalk and ended up quarantining with my wife in Bali after hearing the alarming numbers of deaths and hospitalizations taking place in New York, where we live. Our home was the epicenter undoubtedly of one of the most tragic events in the history of our world and my generation. 

To add to the chaos and panic in the United States on May 25, 2020, George Floyd was arrested after allegedly passing a counterfeit $20 bill at a grocery store in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood of Minneapolis. He died after Derek Chauvin, a White police officer, pressed his knee to Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds during the arrest. 

To dispute this unjust social treatment there was an ongoing series of police brutality protests that began in Minneapolis in the United States on May 26, 2020, and continue till this day. 

While the US has long been home to a vibrant protest environment, demonstrations surged to new levels in 2020. Between 24 May and 22 August, ACLED records more than 10,600 demonstration events across the country. Over 10,100 of these — or nearly 95% — involve peaceful protesters. About 93% of racial justice protests in the US have been peaceful

When I saw all my family, friends, and peers standing in solidarity, marching our streets and on the U.S. capital peacefully I felt the need to do my part from afar the best way I know how through my music. I was really moved by an Instagram post of an interview with Stephen Jackson in which he calls out for justice for the murder of his brother George Floyd. He spoke about how it's a cultural flaw that this continues to happen to African Americans in the United States without consequence. 

I sampled Stephen Jackson's voice and took some Gospel vocal samples to create a House track with the message of social change for all, in honor of the Black Lives Matter movement. The song turned out great but I didn't want to use this creative outlet to self-promote myself at the time, so I kept it private and shared it only with friends and played it out a couple of times to gauge feedback. It's been well received in by many people from all walks of life. 

With the Derek Chauvin murder case happening right now I realize how important it is for me to share this message with our community. The track starts off with an angelic church choir song and into Stephen Jackson's message. The upbeat tempo represents the time at which our people marched and the urgency for justice NOW! The vibe gets dark and acidy, borderline chaotic in the middle, leaving the listener with no sight to a resolution, full of tension and bewilderment. Then the song opens up and changes chords and uplifts out of the darkness and back in

We had such an unforgettable time all weekend at this intimate friends and family campout/gathering playing music, eating epic food, dancing by the lake, under the moon, stars and in the wilderness!

Critical Times is a tribute to some of the influential artists who have passed on to the other side and left us a soundtrack to our lives. Sometimes even predicting the future or writing history with their lyrics, poems and songs. It's the voices of a generation of music lovers that will live on forever. 

We created this when Prince passed away in 2016, around the same time we also lost David Bowie, and many more including our dear friend Navid Izadi. May they all rest in power, thank you for the gift of music you left behind for generations to enjoy.
