This is part one of an incredible Jimpster 5.5 hour closing set at Tropical Hearts Spring Festival, a collaboration between LA-based Tropical and SD-based Desert Hearts that took place under shaded oak trees in the beautiful La Jolla Indian Reservation Campground.

This party had a rocking dance floor literally from start to finish, and the finish was about 40 minutes overtime when the generator mysteriously stopped working and told us it was time to pack it in.  

Many thanks to Jamie Odell (Jimpster) who played hours over his scheduled time to keep a great party going on a Sunday afternoon we will always remember!

JIMPSTER live at Tropical Hearts Spring Festival Part 1, near San Diego, CA 5/5/13

This set was recorded at 6am sunrise, Monday morning at our Desert Hearts 1 Year Anniversary festival.  The Desert Hearts Crew and myself had been up and running the party for 4 days straight at this point and it was time to close down the best weekend and best party of our lives.  

Over the past year we had built Desert Hearts from a small 200 person gathering into one of the premier 1500 person parties in the world.  Not exaggerating, I would honestly put our Desert Hearts 1 Year Anniversary gathering up against any party in the world.  Everything was so surreal in this moment... it was a culmination of everything I had worked towards in my life and this was my victory lap.  This set starts with me mixing out of Marbs' last track in the beginning and also has a little b2b action with the homie Evan Casey in the last 30 minutes.

Without further ado, this is my version of Desert Hearts Sunrise...  Mentally and physically drained, more proud than I've ever been in my life, surrounded by my closest friends and family, and coming down from one of the most intense acid trips of my life.  I hope you enjoy. <3

When deciding who should kick off our brand new Live @ Desert Hearts Mix Series, it was pretty much a no brainer to have our contest winner, Rachel Torro, do the honor. Rachel was our very first DJ to lead off our Desert Hearts Spring Festival and it was exactly 15 minutes into her set when the helicopter and police convoy came to shut down the event. With the music turned off and everyone hiding in their tents, a legal standoff with city officials led to one of the most tense hours in Desert Hearts history. We had no idea just how much that near catastrophic event would ultimately set the vibe for the entire weekend. When word got back to the dance floor that the party would go on as planned, Rachel came back on to the most glorious roar of celebration we've ever heard. That was followed by one of the most iconic moments we've ever experienced when an unknown hero on the mic announced, "Welcome to Desert Hearts ladies and gentlemen!"

Mikey Lion Live @ Desert Hearts

When we first learned we'd confirmed DJ T. to play our Desert Hearts Spring Festival, there was a collective shock of disbelief and astonishment that ran through all of us.  DJ T. had been one of our biggest idols for as long as we could remember, and now he was going to headline our desert festival which started from such humble beginnings. This was a "We made it..." moment for us.

As we started curating the flow of DJs for our 70 hour non-stop party, we only had one time slot in mind for DJ T. 

Sunday Sunrise.

In our eyes there is no better time slot at Desert Hearts than Sunday Sunrise. If anyone had the track record to create magic on Sunday morning, it was DJ T.. He was the sole choice to lead our moment of triumph.

Part mythical desert harlequin, part modern soul conductor, Mikey Lion is more than a DJ––He’s a freak of nature and an energy controller. The San Diego-native has earned a dusty mystique over the past few years as the center of the Desert Hearts movement and as a house and techno provocateur with a stage presence that suggests he will ride this wave all the way to the top. If there's one thing Mikey does well, it's get the party started.

Lion, real name Michael Leon, has brought the mothafuckin' ruckus to the stages of Lightning in a Bottle, the dustiest storms at Burning Man, and The Do LaB at Coachella, earning nods from Claude VonStroke, Jamie Jones, and Green Velvet in the process. In doing so, Lion and his signature top hat have developed a boisterous voice in the House & Techno scene with strong tribal, hip-hop, and psychedelic elements.

But it all started with Wu-Tang and Daft Punk. Lion first found his way behind the decks as a thirteen year old kid, scratching underground hip-hop records religiously after school. At Coachella as a seventeen year old, he witnessed that legendary Daft Punk performance on the same night he tasted his first dose of psychedelics. The show had such a monumental impact on him, he gave up Hip-Hop and became a House DJ the very next day.

After honing his craft with weekly marathon DJ sessions at Sala Razzmatazz in Barcelona, Mikey was introduced to Burner culture at Lightning in a Bottle, 2011. It was at his first Burning Man in 2011 that he found a community calling and merged forces with his brother Porkchop, life long friends Marbs & Deep Jesus, and the inimitable Lee Reynolds to form The Desert Hearts Crew.

In November 2012, Desert Hearts began as a seedy, 200-person renegade gathering deep in the Mojave Desert. The intrepid crew barely survived a set of extreme weather conditions and unfortunate circumstances, but that first party sparked a fire. The entire point of that first Desert Hearts was to create as much love as humanly possible, and now that same gathering has evolved into the darling of the West Coast house and techno scene. The Bi-annual festival is capped at 3500 attendees in order to create the best possible vibe. Built upon beautiful people getting as weird as possible to deep and trippy house and techno, Desert Hearts has already achieved iconic status in the North American Festival Scene. 

Desert Hearts has given rise to a family of thousands and it's safe to call it a bonafide movement of love. And while Desert Hearts Records launched in 2014 as a totally-free record label, pushes the sonic aesthetic of the scene, the crew’s busy international calendar of bookings has the DH message spreading far and wide. At the center of it all is Mikey Lion, the dusty prince of desert hearts, a beacon of weird far and wide, and one of this generation’s most compelling agents of love.
