What's Up Desert Hearts Family,

I'm proud to release my full set from our Desert Hearts 10 Year Anniversary Festival. If I had to choose one, this is my favorite set I've ever played, hands down.  This party for me was 3 years in the making with the constant setbacks from the pandemic and I've literally dreamed about playing this set for our Desert Hearts Family since 2019.  Not only did I play my best, but we all had so much pent-up energy going into this festival and I truly believe we expulsed all the love and positivity we had inside us into the universe during these 2 hours which made for the most radical DJ experience I've ever had while surrounded by my family & friends. If you're an up-and-coming DJ watching this, I hope one day you'll get to experience something like this because it was one of the most incredible moments of my life. This is what this music and this movement are all about.

There's no better feeling on this planet than stepping into the DJ booth at Desert Hearts Festival during peak hour on a Saturday night. There's always something special in the air when we let our hair down behind the Desert Hearts DJ Booth. This year was no exception for me. A lot of emotion and hard work lead up to this year's DH. The heavy tour schedule, as well as scaling back to one festival per year, magnified the importance of this Desert Hearts to our community. It was the usual reset that it always provides to us. That moment when all there is IS the moment. Well, here's that moment for me, when everything disappears. I'm very excited to be able to release this Live set and my heart is full as I share this experience with you. Thanks to everyone who danced and celebrated together. You have no idea how much it means to me.

From chasing waves as a kid in San Diego, to chasing my mind as an adult at Burning Man... it doesn’t matter which one we’re talking about - the Playa will always have a special place in my heart.

Three years ago I released a track called 'Playa Dreams' on my Drum Formulas EP, which was a clear reflection of my soul trying to find my life's purpose. Although I had an idea of what was to come, Desert Hearts was still in its infancy... also trying to find its voice.

It's now 2018 and Desert Hearts is the only future I know. Our purpose of spreading love and positive energy is written in our destiny. I now know I have the power to control energy and have never been more determined to change the world with this message.

I recorded this mix opening the night at our last City Hearts Los Angeles party at The Belasco and all 2.5 hours pretty much span my entire taste in House these days. It starts off chill, but builds and builds and builds.... 

It doesn’t matter which Playa you’re on, this music was made for it.

Hunt & Gather Sessions 12

For this episode I decided to do something different and release my 6+ hour LIVE Recording from Bar Américas in Guadalajara.

There's something special about this venue. I've played there twice now and the energy is completely electric. They love techno and it seems that I can get as dark, weird, progressive, techy, or anything else I'm feeling while on the journey with them. That freedom and trust on a dancefloor is something unexplainable. This one was a marathon and it travels to a lot of different corners.

The accompanying art piece was inspired by the energy that night and the easily recognizable neon LED grid on the low rise ceiling above the crowd.

We are so excited to drop Porky's live set from the festival this year. It was a definite crowd favorite, and he was in his ultimate element from the very first track.

After taking some time off traveling, Porky came back slugging away with the heaters, mixing between his eclectic tastes in music of throwbacks, special edits, and tripped out tech that set the tone as the sun went down Saturday evening. 

In Porky's own words, "This year was my favorite set I've played at the festival yet!"

Part mythical desert harlequin, part modern soul conductor, Mikey Lion is more than a DJ––He’s a freak of nature and an energy controller. The San Diego-native has earned a dusty mystique over the past few years as the center of the Desert Hearts movement and as a house and techno provocateur with a stage presence that suggests he will ride this wave all the way to the top. If there's one thing Mikey does well, it's get the party started.

Lion, real name Michael Leon, has brought the mothafuckin' ruckus to the stages of Lightning in a Bottle, the dustiest storms at Burning Man, and The Do LaB at Coachella, earning nods from Claude VonStroke, Jamie Jones, and Green Velvet in the process. In doing so, Lion and his signature top hat have developed a boisterous voice in the House & Techno scene with strong tribal, hip-hop, and psychedelic elements.

But it all started with Wu-Tang and Daft Punk. Lion first found his way behind the decks as a thirteen year old kid, scratching underground hip-hop records religiously after school. At Coachella as a seventeen year old, he witnessed that legendary Daft Punk performance on the same night he tasted his first dose of psychedelics. The show had such a monumental impact on him, he gave up Hip-Hop and became a House DJ the very next day.

After honing his craft with weekly marathon DJ sessions at Sala Razzmatazz in Barcelona, Mikey was introduced to Burner culture at Lightning in a Bottle, 2011. It was at his first Burning Man in 2011 that he found a community calling and merged forces with his brother Porkchop, life long friends Marbs & Deep Jesus, and the inimitable Lee Reynolds to form The Desert Hearts Crew.

In November 2012, Desert Hearts began as a seedy, 200-person renegade gathering deep in the Mojave Desert. The intrepid crew barely survived a set of extreme weather conditions and unfortunate circumstances, but that first party sparked a fire. The entire point of that first Desert Hearts was to create as much love as humanly possible, and now that same gathering has evolved into the darling of the West Coast house and techno scene. The Bi-annual festival is capped at 3500 attendees in order to create the best possible vibe. Built upon beautiful people getting as weird as possible to deep and trippy house and techno, Desert Hearts has already achieved iconic status in the North American Festival Scene. 

Desert Hearts has given rise to a family of thousands and it's safe to call it a bonafide movement of love. And while Desert Hearts Records launched in 2014 as a totally-free record label, pushes the sonic aesthetic of the scene, the crew’s busy international calendar of bookings has the DH message spreading far and wide. At the center of it all is Mikey Lion, the dusty prince of desert hearts, a beacon of weird far and wide, and one of this generation’s most compelling agents of love.
