The testimony of great vitality in the city of Nuceria, and especially of a major mining operation, so as to be known throughout the Aegean, we received thanks to an ancient love story that deserves our attention. 
One of the earliest Greek romances that we witness is entitled Stories efesii around Abrocome and Anzia greek writer, who probably lived between the second and third centuries AD, Xenophon Hephaestus. The work has come to us in five books, although in the Suidas Lexicon or Byzantine Suda, one speaks of ten books. Here's what our author says the Suda, "Xenophon; Hephaestus; writer of stories: Story Ephesia: ten books on love and Anzia Abrocome; and the city of Ephesus and other "(A. ADLER, Suidae Lexicon, vol. III, p. 495, vv. 24-6). 
The Suda or Suidas, which is both a lexicon and historical encyclopedia of the tenth century by the Byzantine historians writing in greek, it is very important source for knowledge of ancient Greek literary history. 
This novel proved to be a valuable historical document because unlike the other novels by other ancient authors, Xenophon does not set his novel in the distant and unknown lands but in his time and in the most important cities of the Mediterranean. 
In this adventure you tell the story of two young boys: Abrocome son of Lycomedes and Temisto, and Anzia daughter Megamede and Evippe, all citizens of Ephesus. Both of such beauty as to arouse wonder, during the celebrations for Artemis fall in love. The two, with the consent of parents and citizens get married and to avoid a sinister prophecy of the oracle of Apollo, they decide to take a trip to Egypt. During the journey, the two players will be exposed to many adventures, including a capture by pirates, intrigue, imprisonment, shipwrecks and attempted rape. Not missing, however, the happy ending where the two protagonists are reunited at last, without any failed their mutual fidelity; and when they return home. But now we enter into the merits. 
Xenophon has proved a valuable historical source for our statements because, although not openly, it is reasonable to think that for a time he lived in Nuceria or in its surroundings. In fact, after a careful analysis of the text reveals that Xenophon appears not to know anything Ephesus, the city that is the beginning and the end of his novel, while showing he knows the city Nuceria because in Book V (8, 1-5, 10, 1-3) does happen to Abrocome Nuceria seeking Anzia. 

This full episode shows us that at that time Nuceria still made use of a solid business system and, with a harbor, where they landed and started well at night, even of a flourishing trade in goods. A city, then, that could spark the interest of anyone for the presence of Jewish merchants, Egyptian and Syrian, coming from the East, but also a coming and going of workers who already dawn were preparing to carry out the more hard labor for entrepreneurs arrogant, without losing, however, the inevitable profiteers and pimps, ensuring that easy money and comfortable distractions, especially pounced on unsuspecting travelers. Nuceria, in fact, at that time you did not miss anything, in fact, with those features, attracted about whether new economic opportunities for entire families, and possible fraudulent agreements for unscrupulous individuals coming from many cities in crisis not only in the Mediterranean basin . Already, the frightening crisis of the third century, which folded many major cities but that seems like it may be inferred, shot past the city of Nuceria.
