GIFT-GIVING DANCE (midi instruments)
In this dance the members of Isis's family compete to give Isis their gifts and thereby win her devotion. The festivities are suddenly interrupted by Death’s knock at the door.

ACT ONE: “The Birthday Party”

The first act opens with the birthday party of Isis, a teenage girl on the brink of adulthood. The members of her family arrive to celebrate and present her with gifts, each one an amulet which they believe will protect her from harm as she passes through life. With their gift they try to win her over to their particular set of fears and prejudices.

The party is gate crashed by an old Tramp Lady. She reveals to Isis that in the face of reality all these gifts are powerless and encourages her to break free from her family’s influence. Isis is too scared of their rejection to do as the old woman says but she is also disillusioned with their opinionated dogmatism. 

To escape her confusion she shuts herself in her bedroom where she creates a dream boyfriend in her dressing table mirror. Her daydream comes to life and enters the room to dance a dance of passion and infatuation with her. As they consummate their love Isis becomes aware that her family are watching them and they’re not pleased. Her dream boyfriend calls for her to follow him and fulfil her dreams but although she wants to go with him she cannot do so without her family’s blessing. The inner turmoil that this creates within her divides her into two warring personalities. One of these rebelliously leaves home to face the outside world while the other stays behind to pacify the demands of her family.
