This song grew on me BIG TIME, and quickly. It has sort of a The The meets Radiohead kinda thing going. It is certainly about the most fun I've had mixing a tune in quite a long time.

This is a great little tune! It was posted on Crowd Audio for a mixing competition, which I actually did not get around to entering, but wanted to mix the tracks anyway.

Back in college, from time to time, my brother would visit me in Baltimore and we'd hit a pub called 'The Cat's Eye.' Something about this tune harkened me back to those evenings in a jazz club, and I tried to get that feel from the mix.

BenjaminJohn Better Way Master 48 - 24

Well, it only took a week for me to find the new most difficult mix I've ever encountered. All told, this was nearly 90 tracks (89, to be exact), and a wall of sound and drums and guits and so on and so forth. 

I think I nailed it, but it took me several days (5, to be exact)to finally get the tune where I thought it needed to be.

PS: This lead singer has an unbelievably cool voice. 

The Matthews' "Save Me" -- My "I Never Once Forgot to Save" Mix

This is a great little tune. If I had been the producer on it, I almost certainly would have nibbled at the cool, low-key chorus lines just once more, but at the same time, it does make you want to listen again to get that part out of your system.

Carroll's 'Private Moon' -- My "Rock, Blues, DX7s Meet New" Mix

This song is pretty cool, but the most interesting part was the method in which it was recorded.

See that head in the background? That's a binaural technique. That head Has the listening devices in its ears, capturing the live feeling in a great room. Amazingly pure recording.

American Trappist - - Leann

This was one of the more interesting mixes I've encountered in a long time. Not the best drum recording I've ever heard, but the guitars are amazing, the bass is very well DI and amp mic covered, and the backup vocals are warm and still clear. So, both tough and wonderful! 

I really like this tune. Hope you enjoy my mix. 
This is East Hundred, with their tune Hammerhead. Mixed and Mastered.

Oh, and for the record, the lead singer is the new love of my life. Pretty as hell, but even more importantly, such a beautiful, non harsh, warm, yet strong, voice! You go girl!! lol

East Hundred's, "Hammerhead"

This is, far and away, the funkiest damned thing I've ever heard, and with time signature changes which can lead even the world's greatest conductors speechless. 

It is also a spectacularly recorded right from the get-go. Great instruments, great mic usage, etc. Mixing this was an absolute pleasure. 

It is funky from the start, but if you don't make it past the first 3 minutes, you'll miss the truly most unreal part. From the beginning, I want to reiterate, it is amazing. 


I would give anything to meet these guys and gals.
They are something quite unique and certainly as talented as any set of musicians I've ever known/heard.

Was justice done on the mix? I truly hope so, 'cause otherwise, jail time is required.

J Pope -- How Long (You have been FUNKED) Mix

PassengerSide -- Evening Darling, My Mastered Copy

These tracks were recorded using Telefunken Mics, at the Telefunken Studios. There is no better overall microphones in the world, at least, in my opinion. The song is also fantastic. 

Thanks to Telefunken for continuing to offer these tracks to engineers for a really fun mixing experience!

This is the second of many Americana songs I'll be mixing. I love this sorta music.

Fruition -- Santa Fe

This is a great song, and a very interesting recording by Mike Senior and a difficult one to bring into its own, in mixing and mastering, at least for me.

I love the tune, and it made the time spent on the mix well worth it.
I took a risk using a drum loop from a track, and then bleeding back in the live recording of the drums, which one can hear as the high hat begins to build.

Not sure if that was a smart idea or not. Opinions are welcome, of course, but mostly, I just love the song.

For any other audio engineers or audio buffs out there, a polarity problem definitely existed, but I did manage to figure it out, although only in the mastering process; never expected or noticed in mixing.

Hollowstate -- Grave Digger

I am on the Americana binge, as I might have said in previous song posts recently. I love this kind of music. Far less tracks, but equally difficult, or maybe more so, to get right. 

Jamie Kent is kick ass Americana. Hero of mine now! 

I hope I did him justice.
I recommend you watch the official video he put out; try to remember, you'll need more cowbell!

That is not my mix. But the video is friggin' awesome, and the mix isn't bad at all.

Jamie Kent -- All American Mutt Master

Another installment in my Americana binge! This guy is unreal; hits every hole with the right peg, uh, as it were. 

Rolling Sone has actually featured him as an up and coming Americana Rock artist to keep an eye on.

The only complaint I have, and frankly, I'm a bit surprised on this:
I think Mike Senior was the engineer who recorded these tracks, and the bleed was horrible. It was clearly a live studio recording, and I've done plenty of those, as well as 2 Counting Crows live on stage ones. This was the most difficult I've ever done from a live studio performance. 



The song was only 15 or 16 tracks long, and I fought with it for days due to the bleed, mostly affecting the high end and some delays caused by room mics and such which would cause the drums to have a doubling and delaying effect.

I think I handled that, but it was the most difficult 15 tracks I've ever mixed.

I love the tune. Hope you like!
