This album is a cocktail of glamour, noir, Latin sway, and pure golden-age fizz. We open on the brooding strut of Peter Gunn, Henry Mancini’s mean-street blues theme, then we glide and saunter through the songbooks of Rodgers & Hart (You Took Advantage of Me, Manhattan), Harold Arlen (I've Got the World on a String), and Fats Waller (Ain’t Misbehavin’) .
Berlin’s Puttin’ on the Ritz taps its way in with top hat energy, while Orange Coloured Sky bursts like a comic-book "BAM!" over tight Nat Cole-style rhythms. We sway down to Rio with Jobim’s The Girl from Ipanema, mambo our hips through a medley of 1950s Latin classics, and cool off in the smoke and late-night bop of Black Velvet.
There’s groove from the Mar-Keys (Last Night), breathless joy from Almost Like Being in Love, and a bright blitz of bravado in How About You. And just when the party couldn’t get more highball-glass fizzy, Bing Crosby’s ghost floats in with a snowy farewell (White Christmas) — because every proper soirée ends with something sentimental.
