Mind My Business is a love song that captures the nuance of the ostensibly-contradictory emotions we hold simultaneously: love and hate, fear and familiarity, pain and numbness, acceptance and resistance. The hook expresses a want for reconciliation and commitment, while the verses tell a story of isolation, self-loathing, exasperation, loss, and disconnect, all the while laughing at the truth and divine absurdity of it all.

Ultimately, the only constants are uncertainty and our own inner voice.

There’s a false sense of peace and nobility in abandoning the self to serve others. It’s taken a long time to realize because my love for others is deep and genuine. I give love and trust freely, but never reserve the same care and compassion for myself. Taking care of others is second nature. Taking care of myself has always been an arduous process of reluctant trial and error. I can admit now that I have the same human wants and needs as everyone else.

In a world full of conditional love, learn to love yourself unconditionally.

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Miles began making music in 2016. In 2018 they became a founding member of punk-rock-inspired internet rap group @staydeadboys, and began their solo career in earnest in 2020.

Miles’ music reflects and embraces the contradictions of life and identity, of confidence and humility, of autonomy and limit, of humor and even joy in sadness. When we befriend our pain it dissipates. When we share our parallel journeys from a place of authenticity and ownership, vulnerability is a strength. Art is a spiritual practice that can be as serious or as lightweight as the moment calls for.

Miles is working on their debut album.

In their early teens Miles memorized an encyclopedia of lyrics while falling in love with the writing, craft, and conviction of artists like Big L, Rakim, and Ms. Lauryn Hill. Like many contemporaries (such as JID and Sylvan LaCue), Miles’ work centers on interpreting the spirit and sensibilities of an earlier generation of hip-hop through the lenses of modern aesthetics and of their own life and experiences.
