Hoops is about the push and pull between moments of isolation and self-preservation, and the desire to be seen. Although the song was written at the height of the 2020 pandemic, and thus quite literal in its isolation themed identity, it also happens to translate to so many moments since we’ve been released from our respective homes. Seeing your friends hanging out without you, realizing you haven’t left the house in days, staring at the little dress in your closet and wondering if there will ever come a time to wear her again. Hoops is about the sudden burst of social energy, the physical memory of how it feels to be seen and desired, and realizing that if you want that person, you’re gonna have to make yourself known by that person.

Lines of Fight return with Practice & Ritual, a new release that continues their exploration of loss, memory, and the emotional strain of living through rapid change. Building on themes from their recent Double A-Side series, the track focuses on how people cope when familiar structures fall away and the world feels increasingly unstable.
Practice & Ritual examines the small actions people repeat to stay grounded: the habits, routines, and gestures that help make sense of uncertainty. The track reflects on how these practices can be both steadying and fragile, especially when the systems around us shift or collapse. It extends the band’s ongoing interest in solastalgia, displacement, and the quiet emotional labour involved in trying to hold on to something solid.
Written during a period of personal reckoning, the song traces the uneasy space between self protection and self sabotage, and the ways private struggles can affect the people we love. Images of empty roads, sleeping geese, and unreachable stars create a landscape that feels both internal and external, a place where grief refuses to settle and where the body keeps moving even when the mind cannot. The refrain “practice and ritual” becomes a grounding mantra: the small, repeated acts that help us navigate uncertainty, rebuild connection, and stay present.
