Melbourne-based DJ and radio host @milluu has firmly established herself as a vital contributor to the city’s buoyant music scene in recent years. As a true drawcard for the local and global online scenes, and the host of two beloved radio shows, her sunny, groove-laden sound has seen her quickly gain recognition as a deeply skilled selector with an ear (and record bag) perfectly suited to any mood or dancefloor.

Both of her shows - Full Circle on independent station RRR and Dischord on Skylab - are renowned for their perfectly-curated oddities, and give Millú a platform to share her love for both musical diversity and the local scene, with guests and co-hosts joining her to explore genres as far-flung as kraut, downtempo and balearic, through to breaks, acid and IDM.

Taking these same foundational loves into the world with her as a DJ, Millú has graced the stage at numerous key Australian events, including Inner Varnika, Golden Plains, Pitch and Strawberry Fields, delivering stirring, memorable sets either solo, or alongside regular collaborator and partner-in-crime, @pjenne.
Recently, the pair have started work on their latest project, a record label called Companion (@companionmelb), which will delve into downtempo and atmospheric iterations of the electronic underground, bringing the language of ethereal 90s electronica, psychedelic IDM and ambient trance and techno to the present day.  

With Patterns of Perception 81, we find Millú's distinctively warm, dreamy, soulful and adventurous sound in full flight. In this vision, natural soundscapes melt into lush, patient melodies, which in turn rise effortlessly into urgent, liquid rhythms. A seeming disregard for categorisation is betrayed by her careful, well-considered selections and programming, and although countless sounds, feelings and moods pass in the course of this mix, Millú’s uplifting, life-affirming spirit is compellingly present throughout.

Patterns of Perception 81 - Millú

Lush atmospherics and rowdy dance floor favourites by two of Melbourne’s finest, Millú and Pjenné. These two sonic soulmates have been busy at work channeling their predilection for ethereal 90s electronica and meditative leftfield sounds with the start of their record label, Companion. Intrigued to hear more, we got in touch to get the low-down on the new project and life in Australia, among other things. Furthermore, they found a gap in their busy timetable and laid down a beautiful mix for us, which glides from contemplative mind soothers to fist-pumping party vibes in a seamless, 70-minute transmission.

Originally from the coastal town of Mt Eliza, she’s laid the groundwork in the past few years to becoming a staple in the scene. As a regular host to Melbourne’s 3RRR radio, holding the monthly show, ‘Dischord’ on Skylab Radio, she also stands as a resident for both Club D’erange and Wax’o Paradiso. The prior being and outlet for all things “dark and absurd”, while the latter channels the daytime party affair.  

No stranger to peculiar and opaque sounds, her set takes listeners on a bit of journey through the arcane and ritualistic surroundings. For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

As the old saying goes, good thing's come to those who wait. To give that statement some purchase I would like to rewind a few years. Back to before I started this thing, but just after I came up if with the concept, the person responsible for this mix was literally the second name I wrote down to ask for a submission. That person’s name was, and still is, Millú aka the mad hatter aka the silky bar kid aka the human shot glass. Millú’s importance in Melbourne has become solidified over the past few years, going from strength to strength to strength, like a skipping stone across an infinity pool, and she’s dead set (party) legend! 
 
She peaked my attention a few years ago when she played at one of the Max Graef parties at the Gaso we did (which she also helps run ~ bless) and she has firmly kept my attention since. Watching her do her thing, which in turn makes the punters do their thing, is a satisfying sight to say the least. From the depths of hugs to the vast expanse of the supernatural amphitheater, her spell is easy to notice and impossible to resist. I think she’s my most shazamed DJ on the planet - I look to her for a continues source of inspiration. She’s just that fucking good and this mix proves it. 
 
Taking a holiday from the chuggy breaky bleep, she has landed in this pure heavenly mix of lounge and street soul. This instantly takes me back to the good old days of the early 2000’s trip hop phase, (K & D sessions eat your heart out) which is like a pure bliss time machine for me - taking me back to a simpler time, with an air of arrogance attached to a clueless teenager (me), Millú aurally takes me on a beautiful trip down memory lane (which I’m sure will touch anyone who pays this mix a single bit of attention). Perfectly blended like the best milkshake you’ve ever had, perfectly executed like the best dive in Olympic history.

Hopefully my grandchildren will listen to this mix as much as you’re about to.

Having caught the eye though recent sets, it's clear that Millú's style and taste are derived from a broad and diverse range of influences - adding a distinct richness to her multifaceted sets.

Luckily for us (and you), this just-under an hour mixtape is essentially a digital encapsulation of the aforementioned. Starting off on a steady yet leftfield tip, Millú gradually builds momentum and gravitates towards pure dance-floor energy.

"I think, fairly obviously, when you try to think about musical influence, you try to throw your mind back to the earliest music you can remember listening to - and for me, I grew up listening to a lot of blues and jazz at home - records played firstly by my Dad and then later my older brother. Whilst I wasn’t conscious of it for a long time in my teenage years, that influence has definitely resonated in small ways in the way I appreciate music - and the way I DJ - today: from jazz, a willingness to abandon or challenge convention; and a love of the grit of the blues."

We catch up with @milluu, Melbourne DJ and selector of all things eclectic; think left-field electronics, ambient, psychedelia, kraut and beyond.
