Deep. Dark. Progressive. Those three adjectives captured a moment in electronic music that rippled through the scene like a sonic ideology. The sound emerged at the turn of the millennium and embraced its name with laser-like precision: it sure was deep, undoubtedly dark, and undeniably progressive.  

It’s a moment that Stuart McKeown and Darius Bassiray know all too well. As part of Melbourne’s Zero Tolerance crew and two-thirds of Depth Institute, they champion its contemporary incarnation, releasing on labels like Mango Alley, Sound Avenue, and, of course, Zero Tolerance.  

They also lived through it, making them perfectly positioned to pontificate on the scene. Roy Rosenfeld is a producer who prioritizes independence, freedom of expression, and spiritual depth over passing trends. His new label, "No Drama," embodies his musical and lifestyle aesthetics. Despite his advanced studio skills, Rosenfeld remains modest and collaborative. The label's inaugural release features his work alongside Sébastien Léger and Guy J.
The A-side opens with Sébastien Léger's "Omira," a track that guarantees a lively atmosphere on any dance floor. Its eclectic spirit combines world music elements with hypnotic house beats, building up to a powerful crescendo.
Next, Rosenfeld's "Nana" merges the organic house with a carnival vibe and cinematic melodies, all enhanced by tribal percussion.
The B-side starts with Guy J's "Karma," a dark, seductive, and cerebral piece for discerning listeners. This trance-inducing track employs subtle variations of repetitive sequences, creating a minimalist yet captivating soundscape.
The final track on the B-side, "Saga Dawa," available only on vinyl, showcases Rosenfeld's genre-defying talent. He combines Middle Eastern melodies with psychedelic sounds, unpredictable vocal samples, exceptional dance rhythms, and even piano chords, resulting in an inspiring track.
This release marks the launch of "No Drama" and the start of Rosenfeld's new journey.

Redraft Memories is at the heart of the global underground. The Mexican is the first from his homeland to be signed by the mighty Carl Cox to his latest label, 23rd Century, and he has also released on Nervous and Steve Mac’s Jack Said What while picking up further support from the likes of Chip E and Darren Emerson. Now a regular on huge stages like EDC, Tomorrowland and Timewarp, he shows off his forward-thinking take on techno in real style.

Opener 'Eclipse' immediately transports you to the heart of the rave with smoke belching and synths flashing like strobes. There's a trance-inducing element to the pads and serious weight in the rock-solid drums that march out a devastating groove. 'Pakal' is another urgent techno cut that marries flashy synth stabs to a monstrous rolling groove. Analogue percussion cuts through the foggy atmosphere, and smart filters keep things dynamic from start to finish. Last but not least, '305' is another mighty techno trip with synths riding up and down the scales, rubbing bass rattling the walls and a seductive female voice appearing through the shadows.

Techno is a form of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States during the mid-to-late 1980s.The first recorded use of the word techno in reference to a specific genre of music was in 1988. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built.In Detroit techno resulted from the melding of African American music including Chicago house, funk, electro, and electric jazz with electronic music by artists such as Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, and Yellow Magic Orchestra.Added to this is the influence of futuristic and fictional themes relevant to life in American late capitalist society, with Alvin Toffler's book The Third Wave being a notable point of reference. Pioneering producer Juan Atkins cites Toffler's phrase "techno rebels" as inspiring him to use the word techno to describe the musical style he helped to create. This unique blend of influences aligns techno with the aesthetic referred to as afrofuturism. To producers such as Derrick May, the transference of spirit from the body to the machine is often a central preoccupation; essentially an expression of technological spirituality.In this manner: "techno dance music defeats what Adorno saw as the alienating effect of mechanisation on the modern consciousness".

Stylistically, techno is generally repetitive instrumental music, oftentimes produced for use in a continuous DJ set. The central rhythmic component is most often in common time (4/4), where time is marked with a bass drum on each quarter note pulse, a backbeat played by snare or clap on the second and fourth pulses of the bar, and an open hi-hat sounding every second eighth note. The tempo tends to vary between approximately 120 to 150 beats per minute (bpm), depending on the style of techno. The creative use of music production technology, such as drum machines, synthesizers, and digital audio workstations, is viewed as an important aspect of the music's aesthetic. Many producers use retro electronic musical devices to create what they consider to be an authentic techno sound. Drum machines from the 1980s such as Roland's TR-808 and TR-909 are highly prized, and software emulations of such retro technology are popular among techno producers.

Music journalists and fans of techno are generally selective in their use of the term; so a clear distinction can be made between sometimes related but often qualitatively different styles, such as tech house and trance. "Techno" is also commonly confused with generalized descriptors, such as electronic music and electronic dance music.
