A 22-hour audio project Commissioned by the European Capital of Culture, Esch2022 for Radio Art Zone, a temporary radio art station. Two narrators on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean trace the events of a night lost in an unnamed city. Featuring original text, music and recordings made on various handheld devices, found material, improvised words by Kadence Neill, and viola playing by Benedict Taylor.

Audible Heat is an extended documentary, a fitful academic essay, a mass-media probe, an idiosyncratic piece of travel writing, a densely illustrated sound-art montage, and a deep dive into man’s complex relations with the seemingly eternal sound of the cicada as ‘audible heat’ in human consciousness.

Featuring original music and field recordings, and spoken contributions by writer and translator Cristina Viti and filmmaker Ahmed Yassin Aldaradji, Audible Heat ranges across continents, embracing Greek tongue twisters, the poetry of Ibn Quzmān and Harry Crosby, African-American mathematician Benjamin Banneker’s lost wooden clock, Plato’s Phaedrus, cicadas on the film sets of Sergio Leone’s ‘Spaghetti Westerns,’ the body language of Clint Eastwood, the apocalyptic premonitions of the Wampanoag, Geronimo’s hatred of telegraphy, and botanist Donald C. Peattie’s terror of the inescapable buzz of mortality.

Equal parts academic argument, travelogue, and critical collage, this synthesis of ideas pulls upon a wide-ranging bibliography of materials to examine the omnipresent sound of the cicada throughout human history and culture. Herein, this climatic sound acts as a conduit between ecology, identity and mortality, and the cicada’s sonic inference emerges as a codification of the unknown and unfamiliar—as a spiritual weathervane in desert settings—and as a means of teasing out the sensorial limits of human understanding.

Audible Heat was written, read, recorded, produced & scored by Milo Thesiger-Meacham. It was first commissioned and broadcast as a work for radio by Radiophrenia, September 2023.

As a manuscript Audible Heat was shortlisted for the inaugural edition of the Prototype Prize, 2024, and was published as a book by Tenement Press (https://tenementpress.com/Audible-Heat), February 2025. Its radiophonic counterpart was released on CD by World Service (https://world-service.bandcamp.com/album/audible-heat), March 2025.

A series of homemade acoustic notification sounds for messaging apps, soundtracking difficult moments in the “user experience”:
1 - Deleted message: dropping recording device on drums + piano.
2 - Slow sending message: squeaking door.
3 - Typing error: frustrated sigh during a recording outtake.
4 - Phone dying: creaking door.

Live soundtracking an un-viewed film found online in all its separate takes and outtakes. Made and uploaded in 100 pieces to YouTube a decade ago by a group of unknown American college students completing a class project, I’ve pieced together all takes and behind the scenes banter in order of plot and written a score. In 'Friendly Printer', an office printer somehow becomes sentient, printing money and declarations of love to manipulate a young man by the name of "Desmond”.

In a case of unforgivable corruption my choice for the Radiophonic Institute's 'Most Unpleasant Sound of the Year' category was rudely overruled but did result in this three minute monologue about mosquitoes, instincts and blood broadcast for Resonance FM's Clear Spot hosted by Ilia Rogatchevski. Well done Luce Roux for her recording of mosquitoes titled "Entretien Avec Un Moustique" (Interview With a Mosquito).

The Most Unpleasant Sound of the Year

A reading from my book ‘Audible Heat’ on Tenement Press as part of NNOO at Café2001, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, 22 June, 7-11pm. An event series organised by Zara Sarin, David Horvitz & Joseph Mosconi.

In conjunction with David Horvitz’s survey exhibition 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜, now on view at JOAN Los Angeles until August 23. A series of readings, walkthroughs, and beach visits will unfold over the course of the exhibition.

The weekend’s events took place at Horvitz’s 7th Avenue Garden and at Cafe 2001 in Downtown—two locations also featured in the exhibition at JOAN and captured by artists in the show.

"... I stepped back from the window towards the cat and watched her little face in astonishment. Her closed eyes were engaged in what I can only describe as a wild dance beneath her eyelids. The speed of their movement was like nothing I’d seen before in any animal or human! Back and forth then up and down in such rapid darting motions that trying to keep up with them made me feel very sick. A minute or so later, they slowed to gradual but constant revolutions as though her eyelids were small bowls and her eyes were rounded spoons scooping out the last of a soup. I wondered what on earth it must feel like to have those eyes, and, more importantly, I wondered what exactly was happening behind those eyes. What dreams and schemes were being imagined? Neither of us could tell or ever know, suffice to say that the motions of the storm, which came in great, loud waves of anger and fury now synchronised with the slow rolling eyes of the cat. With each revolution came another climax of wind and rain which beat on the windows."
